Amazing article here for everyone to read written by Pat Jennings, about the Soviet-era goalkeeper and still the only one (goalkeeper) to ever win the Balon d'Or.
Obviously very relevant today with the World Cup in Russia looming in just over a week, plus a fantastic read that shows the mix of politics and sport back then in very different times.
Enjoy!

It’s always difficult to compare across generations.
But when a great keeper tells everyone that he was the greatest then you have to go with that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The article wasn't written by the keeper Pat Jennings. It was a journalist called Patrick Jennings.

Well that was a cluster pump from me!!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I had to google it because being a northern irish man I knew fine rightly that big Pat wasn't going off into deepest darkest Russia to do a human interest piece with Yashins wife
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He went deep undercover,obviously!

It's a good article. Even speaks of Him being vilified for a poor performance at WC62, yet no one spoke of how he was suffering from concussion which affected his performance

Yes indeed! Add to that Bill Glazier, Ken Mulhearn, Jim Montgomery and a whole host more.

Lev Yashin was described by many commentators as the best in his era, but you could add many more that could be classed the best since then. Who will ever forget that save Gordon Banks made from Pele's downward header. I'm sure the list could go on and on, so it really depends what era you grow up in.
