Players at the World Cup

Let's talk about the England players and the current / past / future Manchester United players we've seen at the World Cup.

I've really enjoyed the competition so far. Some great games.

Some random things:

- Lingard has been England's best player so far over the two games. Really glad for him but I feel for Stretty.
- Sterling hasn't been half as bad as many have claimed, but I thought it was a shame Rashford didn't get a chance to restore our goal difference advantage over Belgium.
- Young has been England's weakest performer. But perhaps Rose's cameo against Panama demonstrates why he is getting picked. Young's professionalism and caution make him fairly dependable. Rose (coming on with fresh legs in on hot day) had mistakes in him and looks well below his best, which would be well above the level Young is playing at.
- [imported from another thread] Kane is the most Shearer-like striker England have had since the world's least charismatic pundit was playing. There's absolutely no nonsense, nothing playful about his game. Just very sound technique paired with efficiently doing what is necessary. As TRC said, this is epitomised by his penalties. None of this metrosexual foreplay with the goalie, just leather it into the corner.
- Some players move on from your club and the bond is broken immediately. I don't care what Shinji Kagawa does for the rest of his career. But I celebrated joyfully when Chicharito scored.
- I'd still sign Luka Modric at the age of 35.

Indeed, Rose was a nonentity, as were the other two subs yesterday.

I thought he had a great opportunity to stake a claim against the weakest member of the starting XI. Coming on against tiring legs, playing against the worst team in the competition. But he probably confirmed that Southgate had made the right call.

Another World Cup like: those Senegalese fans with painted chests and faces and military-style caps.

Their manager is great too

Senegal, Japan and Colombia are all very likeable teams in very different ways. I don't really wish any of them would miss out on the knock-out stage. But I'd like England to avoid Colombia.

Yep, Columbia look the strongest team in the group... Without that early red, they'd probably have romped home against Japan too.

Think we could take either of Senegal or Japan.

Agreed.

Columbia have a bit of X-factor about them going forward. Quintero, James, Cuadrado and Falcao are good players with good movement. Don't think they've been tested defensively yet though but they are good fun to watch. Senegal's pace and power can cause problems. Question marks again in defence.

It's a really enjoying World Cup so far in my view.

I was really happy for Falcao too.

What's with the faux Russian in your name, Mike? Looks like Google translate - 'this is arrival the main'.

Maybe my heart is of stone but I didn't really care about Falcao, though I enjoyed the goal itself and Colombia's attacking football in general. England would do well to avoid them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I used google translate for 'It's Coming Home' and then when I fed it back into the translator it was something like 'he goes home' or something about a parish

Did it one word at a time after that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The word for 'he' can also be 'it' because all Russian nouns have gender. Your word for 'home' is the adjective 'main' but out of context Google has decided you meant 'home' as in 'homepage'.

Try the following if you want it to make sense:

возвращается домой (it's coming home)

or:

футбол возвращается домой (football's coming home)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nah just kidding I was messing with you, I actually wanted it to say 'this is arrival the main'.

Have you seen Mike's new user name? I never thought he was the type. Can't say I approve but you have to admire his honesty.

I think England’s back three has been all over the place and are going to come unstuck against better sides. They’ll struggle to cope with a high press on the ball. And decent movement is going to cause big problems.

Also when England aren’t dominating the ball, Henderson is going to get a lot of criticism for how ineffective his passing actually is
