To commemorate the scoring of 6 England goals I thought I would share my six of the best and worst of the 2018 World Cup so far. Please feel free to add others. Interested to hear other’s views.
6 of the best!
1. England’s results (so far!)
2. General quality of the football (but see later). Loads of goals, controversies and no nil nils yet (I know a nil-nil result does not mean the football was poor)
3. Refs on the whole allowing games to flow and ignoring most attempts at simulated mortal injury
4. VAR technology (but see later). Great to actually see what happened even if the evidence is ignored far too often
5. BBC pundits (generally) Rio, Frank and Cesc have been pretty good on the whole impressed with Alex Scott as well.
6. The Icelandic Thunderclap. My goodness that is some pretty awesome thing to witness even on the television.
6 of the worst!
1. VAR implementation. I need say no more. The technology is there but is being used/implemented incorrectly (IMHO)
2. Dreadful tactics from some sides. Tunisia, Panama (first half) and others clearly intent on serial fouling
3. The English band. Just embarrassing to hear them vomiting out the usual jingoistic claptrap. We don’t need them to motivate us to support the England team. (Apologies I know some of you probably like them). Also the Iranian vuvuzela-type things they use gave me a bloody headache watching them
4. Political goal scoring gestures (especially Shakiri and Xhaka). Ffs we have enough politics in our lives at the moment without it infiltrating our beautiful game.
5. ITV pundits. Roy Keane? Seriously? There are others too , the only one I have really rated is Eni Aluko, she knows her stuff.
6. The English (written) football media. Most England fans have been quietly confident of doing OK and not over-reacting to a couple of good results and half-decent performances but as usual the press seems to be reverting to type and ramping up the hyperbole.

For me VAR has done more good than harm, but naturally the bad ones are gonna get more focus. And they should, because if the game stops for 60 seconds they'd better make the right damn decision!
As for the media, a lot of what you say is true but there have been some really stellar examples of journalism if you look hard enough. Just have to sort them from the mountains of trash.

I agree about the BBC pundits as well. Fabregas, Drogba and Zabaleta have all been absolute bullseyes, and the England team (Lineker, Shearer, Lampard, Ferdinand) is class. Shame about Phil Neville.
