was not to be England`s day again. In a tournament of very average teams, England could still not find a way of getting to a final.
I don`t buy England had an easier side of the draw, frankly there are no outstanding sides in this years tournament, and whether England played Sweden and Columbia or Argentina and Germany, no reason to think the results would have been any different.
Bottom line is England have a workmanlike team, but a really, really poor midfield. Hardly a chance created in the knockout stages. And as I said previously, if Harry Kane does not come to the party, has a poor match, and does not score, then England simply do not win. Simply not enough players in the side capable of scoring, if the main man doesn`t do it, as he patently did not last night.
Southgate as a manager is no more than very average as well. I never brought into all the hype about him, he has shown not a great deal of nous or game management when the flow of the game is going against England. England have really struggled to push on from promising positions. Southgate`s substitutions and timings of the subs have left a lot to be desired. If Southgate is to stay on for the Euros, he will need to find some decent midfielders, the current crop, clearly are not good enough, and also another striker to supplement Kane.
Anyway, it is all over now, I have no interest in the 3rd/4th place playoff, or indeed in the final now, so bring on the proper football, in a little under a months time.
In the cold light of day, it simply

I watched it in the pub last night and obviously it was a drunken rawkus atmosphere which makes it hard to understand whats gone on at times.
With that in mind my question is would Harry Kanes chance of counted (the one where his initial shot was saved and then he somehow hit the post from a foot out on the follow up)? The flag went up very late and I wasn't sure why as he looked level on the replay.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Kane missing one good chance, was not the reason England lost last night, they lost because as a team, they were not very good.

I agree but you haven't answered my question.
Would it have counted as belatedly the flag went up but I don't know what for?

Well his first effort would have, but the second efforet would have been flagged offside.

How?
It came back to him off the keeper so if he was on side initially surely he still was.

Yeah some confusion here.
It wasn't offside, the flag went up because the ball crossed the line:
- Kane was through (no offside), and the keeper saved it
- Kane got to the ball (no offside), but he hit the post and the ball hit the keeper, looped up high, landed just over the line (that's when and why the lino put his flag up.
So no offsides in that move and it would have counted.
I love Kane, but he messed that up.

I like Kane and always support him but let's just call a spade a spade and admit that he was pretty awful in the last two games. We needed him last night and he didn't show up. But he is the player to lead a young team and he will end his international career with great stats.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He had next to no service all tournament, you can't blame your centre forward when the midfield are not good enough to get the ball to him. Hence why we saw Kane dropping into midfield to at least get a touch of the ball. Our central midfield is tragic, that's what cost us the game.

Kane got zero to no service but when he had the chance messed it. But so did others . He got zero service from midfield and had to drop deep to receive the ball.
A lack of fluidity to our play costed us. We lacked the cohesion and guile of many other teams in the tournament.
Southgate has to shoulder the blame as well. Left some of our more creative midfielders at home .

England DID have an easier draw - Belgium should have done a better job of throwing the final group match.
But it is true that England lacks any world class midfielder.
And these games are won in the midfield.
Also there were some of the best sides the world has ever seen in this tournament - Brazil, France, Belgium, and I have to say, Croatia - a surprise to me!
Also the Japanese were no slouches either.
I think England would have lost to Japan. And Denmark. And Brazil. And France. And they will lose to Belgium again, I hope not too badly.
If england do get third place, Southgate will be OTM (over the moon)!
