Sam Warburton - A Sign Of Things To Come?

Retired from the game at 29, 28 if you count the fact that he hasn't played for over a year. The general consensus is that his body can no longer take the battering of modern rugby. If so, that is a poor indictment of the game.

The signs have been there for a while, Binny and Tuilagi to name but two. Are we content to see the best of the best burn out young in a gladiatorial spectacle that Roman emperors might recognise, or do we want to see something different when we watch the sport?

I know I do.

Good mucker. How ya doing. Lost a bit of interest in the round ball at the minute. To many heid the baws on the OF boards for my liking. That's probably just me getting owld and cantankerous TBF

It's a real shame for him, or anyone, to have to cut short his playing career before the usual age. That said, Sam has had an amazing career and achieved a huge amount in it. He will look back with pride as should any Welsh fan. Good luck in the future to him!

And I'm refusing to write off Binny yet mate, we need him too much

Perhaps Demus, but at, what is it, 25, his best days look to be behind him.

I don't think so, broke his arm twice which isn't the sort of injury that ends careers. I think Binny will be fine, I certainly hope so.
Tuilagi is another matter.

I hope you're right for his sake, but he's a bit of a one trick pony TBH. Run though people when you've got the ball. run through them when they've got the ball. There's no doubt that with the way the game is at the minute, it's a great trick and he's undoubtedly the best at it, but it all smacks (no pun intended) of what has happened to Warburton.

That's a harsh view of him, he is much more than that, even though I agree it's his main asset. It is a much more attritional game these days and there is a cost for that but I think we can improve the situation playing (certainly in England) less.

Good luck with persuading the English clubs on that.

Ireland showed the way in the last 6N - reduced game time = fitter players. It's a lot easier for the Scottish and Welsh unions to follow suit. The question is, will they? What will Dave Rennie say if he's asked to not play Jonny Gray against Munster for example.?
