The England v Croatia world cup semi final game became the 2nd highest UK audience for a sports broadcast behind the 1966 World Cup final.
In doing so it relegated another sporting event down to 3rd in the all time viewing list.
In 1970 Chelsea and Leeds battled out an FA Cup Final replay at Old Trafford that drew a TV audience of 28 million which became, the 2nd highest TV audience ever until Englands recent semi final.
It's still one of the most iconic FA Cup finals of all time and lives long in the memory of Chelsea fans 'Of a certain age'!

Amazing that it stayed the 2nd highest televised event for 48 years!
On a side note, former referee David Ellery reviewed the game in 1997 and concluded that the sides would have received six red cards and twenty yellow cards between them, in the modern era of football! (1997).
A bit of Chelsea trivia!

Brummie, good article. I was offered a ticket for that replay. One of the fellas where I worked was a massive Chelsea fan, he had half a dozen season tickets at the Bridge. His old fella was well in with one of the FA Bigwigs in Middlesbrough, so used to always get hold of lots of Cup Final tickets, I had been to a lot of finals in the 1960s through him. But told him to let one of the Chelsea boys at the firm have the ticket to be fair.
Was one of the great cup finals though.

You should have taken the ticket and become a Blue Sandy!
Fair play though fella, nice gesture!

To be fair it was a great goal - just it's taken me over 45 years to appreciate it

In fairness that whole Leeds team were brilliant. Our refusal to give up against the odds (like in Munich) got us through more than anything.

Pep, the viewing figures for the 1990 Semi against ze Germans was apparently 26.2 Mill, so Chelsea v Leeds obviously eclipsed that. As I said earlier that was quite an achievement for a domestic game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Had me confused that - I was thinking, "We never got to the FA Cup semi finals in 1990"!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
me too rewatched the entire highlights video for 90 season(hated the red shirts). Good season for Wilson upfront.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The only Semi that we would have got that year would have been the Full Members Cup.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I went to that...the Colin Lee final...that we nearly threw away

Wrong one Pep, I went to that 5-4 game, but the year that we're all referring to here, we won the final 1-0 against Boro and Tony Dorigo scored the winner. There was lorry loads of fighting down on the concourse.

That was the Zenith Data Systems Cup, the worst match I've ever attended at Wembley
Tony Dorigo's free kick was the only highlight of the game!
