Is "I want to play in the Champions League"

Code for "I want more money" ?

I get the feeling that some players that want to leave their club for a club that plays in the Champions League are not as massively bothered about playing in the competition as they make out.

Chelsea and Arsenal have still been able to sign world class players even when the have not qualified for the CL because they pay huge wages.

Some players even leave a club playing in the CL for one that doesn't simply because the money is better.

I'm not saying all players are just greedy mercenaries, some do want to test themselves at the highest level. But it is by no means all of them and I get the impression some top players would play for Bolton if you paid them £200,000 a week.

Admin please could you multiboard this article as it is about football in general rather than about Spurs? Cheers!

It's not a few quid though any more, the difference is huge. Could maybe stay at Spurs on say £100k a week as a top earner (I don't know what you actually pay), or be offered £250k a week at Madrid or something silly, along with the additional exposure and millions in advertising campaigns etc.

Hard to say what you'd do until you're in that position I think.

Even at 100k a week, that works out to 400k a month, and four and a half million pounds a year, over a 10 year period, that would amount to earnings of close to £50 million just for playing football. If footballers cannot live on that, than what do they think the rest of us live on. Pure greed.

This is quickly becoming a therapy session for Sandy and TTliv about their current financial situations and living with accepting people are more talented and successful.

———————-

Not at all. I think what they are both getting at is that they are paid exorbitantly for the job they are doing. Is a Doctors job less stressful? Yet many don’t earn in a year what footballers earn in week, despite being a professional at the top of their field. Disparity with the real world is about right.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's fine but irrelevant to what i'm saying.

I've not disagreed that they are overpaid. What im arguing is player being judged for maximising their wealth when the opportunity has come along rather than opting for some false sense of loyalty or honour.

They are making the most of a situation and setting themselves up for the future. Yes, they are already millionaires but why not get the most even at that stage?

The football business is worth billions, Sandy.

Footballers have to endure high levels of stress/anxiety. You just have to ask the likes of Gazza, etc how they feel. They also frequently get death threats and their names are constantly in the news. Things that lead to stress/anxiety. Mental health professionals also back this up.

If you think otherwise; then I really pity you.

I agree, I hate the idea that people aren't allowed to have mental health problems just because they are rich. If there is a problem in someone's brain no amount of money will solve it.

Just goes back to being jealous and envious to be honest. Which some can't seem to handle.

Of course they can live off that amount. Of course they can enjoy their lives and not worry but given the opportunity why would you refuse twice your earnings just so that you get some 'loyalty' points.

You're mixing personal feelings towards rich footballers with making a sensible financial decision.

Yeah peasants dont deal with anxiety or mental health issues, fack off.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Where did I say this
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mental health issues is not a valid excuse to take a pay rise when you are already set for life 1000 times over.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe not a valid excuse but it they are having mental health issues they may not be thinking clear or making good decisions.

To answer the OP, it surely differs from one player to the next. Some players take pay cuts to move from one club to another.

People need to get over this "just for playing football" attitude.

It is a multi billion pound industry. Some of these players are at the very very top of this multi-billion pound industry.

Man City made a profit last season depsite having a massive massive wage bill. Most of thier income is from TV & Sponsors and their ticket prices are not the highest. The players deserve their rewards and as the club are not in financial trouble, they are clearly paying the level of wage that is (1) affordable and (2) deserved relative to Revenue which, in turn, relates to success.

Comparing work of sports stars and Docotrs/public sector etc is simply a false comparison. Wages do not reflect how hard they work, how long their hours are, how stressful it is otherwise Nurses would be on a fortune. It is driven by supply and demand and affordability/revenue. Thats life!

There are few people in any walk of life that would reject someone doubling or tripling their wages to do exactly the same job else where. DO you think a nurse or a teacher would show loyalty if the hospital/school down the road offered way more money?
