the stats do who has more clean sheets and whos conceded less thats what matters

Alderweireld was decent against Manchester. United was making it very easy to defend against when they went from being good the first 15 minutes to chaotic, overhit passes that are easy to intercept with a poor Lingard and Lukaku with no matchfitness.

It's clear that vvd is the superior player since

1. He already has the strengths of Vertongnen (I find him better than Alderweireld overall)

2. Is clearly the better leader. Throughout the Watford game I saw no significant coaching or verbal communication from either. This is especially something you want to have when being pressed like Watford did in the last 15 minutes.

3. With 5 man in defense you can afford to manmark the dangermak. In this case it was Deeney. He first threw Sanchez away like he was nothing and was not contested for the first goal. THREE Spurs players (including Vertonghen) were just ballwatching. VVD was brought to mitigate this exact danger that was plague for Liverpool last season. Make a wild guess how many headers were conceded after he came.

4. Players like Deeney, Benteke, Lukaku (when matchfit), Dzeko, etc are players who manifest themselves with their physicality. VVD is better equipped to handle all these players while not losing in speed.

I'd like to point at the shift of attack from opponents who concentrate on the right side to avoid van dijk due to his ability to nullify his opponent. This does mean he has less to do and puts pressure on Alexander Arnold and Gomez, so his stats will be slightly diminished by this.
