DPL vs Charlton Athletic

Two teams in free-fall is how one of the Charlton bloggers sees tomorrow's game and the results certainly suggest that with Rovers 4 points from 18 and Charlton's 4 from 15.

Both teams will be below full strength with McC fearing the loss of at least 1 and possibly 2 first choice yet unnamed players tomorrow and Charlton definitely short of several too.

I think we can expect a good game, Charlton being a decent footballing side usually with a good supply of young talent. Last time we played quite well and lost to a single well-taken goal. This team is far less cagey and no doubt we will carve out plenty of chances.

I feel fairly sure we could win, but Charlton are the sort of team that could match us in footballing ability, so we will need a whole game effort, not just 45 minute's worth. All eyes will be on a full commitment this time, so much has been said.

I am looking forward to going.

I hope for a win, but will go for 2-2 with the scorer Marquis/May/Wilks/Whiteman in that order - surely one of them will start. 10750 there.

Difficult to discern any "positives" from this game. Nothing to encourage hope.

Donald, I agree - the worst performance this year of the of those I've seen (which is all that were on iFollow). The big worry is the lack of chances created - just two good ones. One Kane missed in the third minute and Marquis' attempted header near the end.
There was some positive energy early on, but also a reluctance to shoot (other than by Mason of all people!). Twice Copps played away from goal when I thought he had a good opportunity to get in a shot, but I would not give good marks to anyone. What the hell was Marko doing for the second goal?
It was a relief to watch Arsenal vs. Liverpool immediately afterwards!

Welcome to lets slag off Mason through the back door group
And 26 avoiding shooting twice....NEVER.

I believe teams have looked at how we play which is very Fantasy Football and have set up to play us accordingly.
26 and probably marosi have been our best 2 players so far this season.
Marquis apart we haven't got a decent forward at the club.
The midfield flatters to deceive.
The defence is slow and exposed because of the Fantasy Football tactics that will pay off occasionally.
My knowledge of football is much less than many people but its how I see it after 50 years on the terraces

Lanzarote - I'm not sure whether you were just being sarcastic, but I was applauding Mason for "having a go" instead of who should be.
As far as Copps is concerned, I'm a big fan, and was just a little disappointed today, but would not have taken him off at half-time.
I agree with you about what you have said are our best players so far, but that does not stop a need to criticize now and again.
We have had too many managers with no serious "Plan B", and as you say, once teams learn our style, they capitalize on our weaknesses.
I've watched the Rovers from 1949 until 1974 when I left England for Venezuela (don't ask!) and to the USA in 1976. Until iFollow last season I've mainly just seen highlights, and so seeing games today I may over-react to certain things.
However, it will always be RTID.

It is a bad run. I have only seen the home games but we have played well in them whether winning, drawing or losing. The stats show that we have dominated in almost all of the games this season, but yesterday we didn't and the match reports, suggesting that we were a bit shot-shy, are worrying. A team can only play in the same way all the time if they are so good that there is nothing much the opposition can do about it. That isn't us. We need either a big slice of luck, a strategic rethink and/or a couple of new players in January. We could also do with Rowe and Wright back.

I was there and I doubt whether any of those die-hards amongst whom I sat who travel with the team to support them come-what-may would say we did not deserve to lose this one.

Copps amazes me with his exhibitions of skill, but it was so unproductive yesterday. He twisted and turned, beat his man not once, but often twice and then instead of using the ball or shooting, wasted it or even lost to the man he had out-skilled.

Far from reversing the lack of 90 minutes endeavour, this showed, apart from the opening minutes and odd flashes almost 90 minutes of stagnation.

Charlton sat back in he second half and we passed it across the back mostly, sideways often at best and the only attacking came from May and Wilks, the latter replacing Taylor who just drifted about wide in the first half; he just hung around and made no contribution, hardly getting any touches.

Mason did not play nearly as well as he can, but he does at least have a go.

I do not remember Marquis so ineffective; he had a few weak shots, but was not himself and that makes a big difference.

You could say that there was no Plan A, let alone Plan B.

Very well done to Yorkshire Lad who can be satisfied with his 100% correct prediction. Sadly the fond chant of part of his nom de plume at the beginning of the match was not repeated at all by those loyal to our cause. Indeed I forgot to mention that never before have I heard the faithful away fans boo their team off at the end, such was the disappointment experienced at the performance.
