Enjoyable game tonight, but I wanted to flag two incidents that have not been discussed at all really that I felt could have resulted in penalties.
Both Mkhitaryan and Van Dijk were completely taken out by the opposition keeper in the penalty with the keepers not getting anywhere near the ball. Both players got their shot off before getting clattered (Mkhitaryan early in the first half, and VVD when he hit the post).
My question is, why are penalties never, or at least rarely given for this type of foul? The current thinking to seems to be that if the player gets a shot off, then the foul is ignored. Obviously if they score if doesn't matter. But if a player in the centre of the pitch is taken out after attempting a pass by a late tackle, it doesn't matter whether the pass was successful - a foul is always given.

Its not just keepers too. Seen many a defender clatter a player after they shoot in the box and the ref does nothing.
I think in the ref's mind they are playing-psuedo advantage and their rationale is well they shot so its ok.

Aerial challenges are treated differently. That is just a part of football that has always been there.

I don't have an issue for it, it's pretty much the only thing officials are widely consistent on so let's just keep it that way before it becomes another shady area like offsides that they can get wrong every game.
Already enough penalties as it is as well so let's not be having more.

Ref is human and the more the scrutiny the more they feck up.
The level of detail and scrutiny is at a level where VAR is the only solution.
For today, both pens would be awarded. It would mean a Liverpool win with Mane's goal being given too. Would have still been a thrilling game and less people would feel like the sport is unjust.

Am I missing something, didn't we have a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside too?
