I just finished watching the last series of Black Adder on the iPlayer.
Haven't seen it in years and the comedy is really spot on and overall apart from the final scene (which was touching) it didn't take its self very seriously, but at the same time was really well wrote/acted.
My question is 'Where is the top quality standard comedy these days, that doesn't rely on cheap puns and gimmicks.'
My last good quality comedy is People Just Do Nothing and before that it was The Inbetweeners. But black Adder in my opinion is still better.
Why in such an advanced age we aren't getting well thought out comedy anymore?

One of my favorite blackadder scenes is from the last episode in series 1. The bunch of them are riding on horses and the music and screenshots are done like a spaghetti western. It’s absolutely comedy genius

Yeah season one was a bit weak.
Season 3 was good in parts.
Season 2 and 4 are absolute gold

I remember seeing a programme where the cast where the cast and writers were talking about the first season and they said they wrote it too much like a sketch show.
And I think there is merit in that, if you watch the first season and treat it like it’s a sketch show their are some good individual scenes in there, however they couldn’t weave them together to form a good series of episodes.
The battle scene where Edmond arrives late and him and boldrick watch the battle, the scene where they are selling fake Christian artifacts, the dinner scene with the ghost of Richard III, all would work on a sketch show, but they couldn’t put it together well into the greater narrative.
