Black Mirror: Bandersnatch

** spoilers warning **

Just watched this on Netflix and don’t know what to make of it.

FYI this is an interactive movie where throughout the movie you are given two options as to where the movie goes next. If the option is badly wrong it goes quickly all the way back and you have to chose the other option.

I have watched it twice and got 2 different endings.

I quite like the interactive movie element and this is a very good introduction to it.

Who else has seen this? What endings did you get?

To get a good game rating you have to kill your dad or something

Nice morality lesson there

Just finished it. Liked the interactivity and the fact the Ending isn't as clear as you think. We had option to "exit to credits" before the real ending IMO.

Wow you got your pen and paper out for this.

What would you say is the real ending?

Agreeing to catch the late train.

Yes that was my first ending. The 2nd ending was just bizzare. Had to go through all sorts of scenarios to avoid the first ending. In the end it was a poor ending where his dad took him away from the psychiatric after he knocked out the psychologist but that wasn’t really a satisfactory ending.

Well the whole concept is that even in a "choose your own adventure book" - you never actually chose your adventure, you are just given the illusion of choice but you either die and start again, or like many a child (myself included) you went back to the previous choice and take the other branch.

It was certainly interesting and I felt the concept was lost on many (I'm guessing the younger generation who have never played one of these books) but I enjoyed it and the seemlessness in which it was done.

Also loved the 4th wall breaking.

I have only watched one episode of the 'actual' Black Mirror series (the one with what is basically google glass 76th generation). I really enjoyed that and thought the acting was very good.

This, however, I thought was absolute cr*p. The concept, as has been noted, is decades old and I remember disliking the interactive DVDs as a kid.

I also feel like Brooker read Ready Player One and was very heavily influenced; loving the book myself, it felt somewhat recycled.

With the exception of Colin and Stefan, I thought the acting was atrocious (in particular the dude that runs the developing company)..

Kudos for trying something new, however, ultimately it felt more like one of those school-approved computer programmes designed to teach you about morals and ethics, albeit with the twist of chopping up your Dad .

Completely agree with the illusion of control mentioned above, however.

Now sceptical as to whether to watch the series properly...

This is certainly the black sheep of the family, and I don't think you should base the rest of the series on this one. This one felt more like Black Mirror lite if I'm to be honest, and I think it's so people don't get lost in the narrative - the main series I think is generally much more cerebral in the ideas that it pushes across and how they are portrayed.

I felt the first big choice, choosing between working for the company or doing it yourself, should have just led you down 2 completely different paths rather than one being right and one being wrong.

=====

Just watched (played?) it now. This irritated me as well. By far the most logical choice is to say yes/accept the offer - surely that's why he's gone there in the first place?

It also annoyed me when the two options seemed like very much the same thing, e.g. TRY TO EXPLAIN vs TELL HIM MORE.

Overall I liked it though, even if it was a bit confusing at times and the endings I got weren't particularly good.
