I was watching this youtube compilation of his performance in that game and I was highly impressed.
Was this his best performance in a Man Utd shirt?

One of Keano's biggest strengths and something Pogba and Matic could learn from is that he always kept his passing simple and quick.

People only remember the hard man attitude, he was a brilliant footballer too at both ends of the pitch. His passing ability was much under rated.

100% he was amazing at playing short but incisive passes that would open teams up. A truley remarkable player.

I remember him scoring two goals in a 2-2 draw with Arsenal around 2000/01 time. As well as the goals, he had is usual solid game as well.

His performance for TOO v Holland in the world.cup 2002 qualifiers where we won 1-0 is one of his greatest ever performances. Best I've ever seen live and I've been lucky to have seen most of the best players in the world over the past 18 years live at least once.

2-1 was it. Two late runs from midfield for the goals from memory.

Away at Juve in 99 was. He was colossus in that game. He completely dominated a midfield of Zidane, Davids and Conte

I have always found this to be a little of a misnomer to be honest. Whilst he had a great game a lot of it was over exaggerated by the booking meaning he would miss the final.
Nicky Butt had a cracking game in the centre of midfield as well. It wasn't a one man show by all means.

Aye, Keane, Butt, Becks, Yorke and Cole were 10/10 that night, I think the reason people single out Keane is for the reason you mentioned, he knew he was going to miss the final.
It showed great mental fortitude to put in the performance he did and it was ALL about getting his team over the line, putting his ego to one side and doing what was needed for United.
You take Gazza, knew he would be out of the WC final and his head went, his own ego got in the way of helping his team.
