We hear a lot about playing Kante as Being played out of position .
Was he really a straight forward Dm when he played alongside Matic?
And even alongside Fab.
What about at Leicester?

He only played as a DM in six PL games for Conte before the formation change. He got further forward than Matic once Conte switched to 3-4-3.
Sarri is playing him in position, he's just not utilizing the core strengths of his role but the only way to do that is playing a two man midfield which conflicts with Sarri's football. Long as Sarri's our manager to a certain extent Kante will be underutilized.

I'm not sure why many suggest he's a DM, He's at his best when he is intercepting passes and pressing.
He's a CM, Not a DM.

Best suited in a side that's big on quick counterattacks, which ironically was Chelsea's old style of play.

Kante was best suited to breaking up the play and giving it short to our playmaker. He's not a holding midfielder but I'd also argue if that is someone's job then they'd fall more into a bracket of DM than CM.

I see him as a box to box type, but in the defensive mold.

Kante is used to playing in a counter attack set up as he has done for Leicester, Chelsea and France.
Now under Sarri we've become more possession based and his job is to press higher up the pitch and contribute more in the attacking phase.

This is why for simplistic reasons he's more a DM than a CM
