José Mourinho Spain tax fraud settled in multi-million deal
A one-year prison sentence will instead be exchanged for a fine of €182,500 (£160,160). That will be added to a separate fine of €2m.
Spain rarely enforces sentences of less than two years for non-violent or first-time offenders.
He was accused of owing €3.3m to Spanish tax authorities from his time managing Real Madrid in 2011-2012.
He really is a cretin.
I dont understand these people like Mourinho and probably Messi, to scam the tax man for 3-5 million euro when thats like a month of wages.
If you do it, do it like Ronaldo and go for 18 million.
In terms of tax avoiding caants Ronaldo > Messi
Wonder if Wahl is disappointed in Mourinho now he's a convicted criminal.
Mourinho pleaded guilty

VC, as I said earlier (probably poorly explained), the issue seems to be related to the interpretation of the tax law, specifically I think it’s as regards image rights.
I only have a very sketchy picture of it, but as I understand, it’s about the players having offshore companies created into which these image rights were paid. The tax authorities understood that these monies ought to be considered personal income that ought to be taxed at the corresponding rate within the country and couldn’t just be funnelled offshore.
All of the cases - José, Messi, Di María, Mascherano, Alonso, Ronaldo, etc. - all seem to date back to roughly the same period, but I imagine it wasn’t that simple to prosecute everyone at once, and I presume that tax advisors will no longer be recommending these schemes!

IAOG
I seem to recall you saying this (probably for the Ronaldo one) and it makes more sense to me.
It is just to lazy to put it all down to greed.

A lot of them probably don’t even know how much they have in the bank and prefer to just leave all this stuff to agents and advisors so they can get on with playing footy and video games and pulling birds.
Probably also helps explain why so many professional sportsmen end up stone broke. Or used to, the money’s so big nowadays you’d almost have to give it away.

So he's admitted that he's a fraud.

That's what I always thought how it happened for Messi

I think you're giving them a little too much credit.
Probably correct about some players but many, and certainly Jose, know exactly what they're doing.
They may not know it's illegal but that doesn't make aggressive tax avoidance schemes as any less morally bankrupt in my opinion.
