Azpi in decline?

Changing the subject from the hot topic I must admit his form this season has worried me, he is seriously struggling against players with serious pace especially.

I know some will say it's one poor season out of seven and in principle I agree, but we saw the exact same thing with Ivanovic starting to drop off at a similar age and we all know how bad he got.

Hopefully it's just form as opposed to his new level but he's at the age now where players are vulnerable to dropping like a stone almost overnight.

Always thought he looked best in a back 3 tbh. Maybe that's part of the issue?

I don't watch enough of Chelsea to make an accurate assessment though

That was his best position (back three) but he could still perform anywhere, very few wingers would get an inch against him let alone get the better of him.

That moment when Rashford completely skinned him like an ametuer last Monday is demonstrate to where he is at the minute , not even Messi would have done that to him a couple of years ago.

gave sterling way too much space today, his main issue is going forward though

As Chelsea's captain he failed badly-

I’d still be willing to give him a chance with better players but with each poor performance it is starting to look likes he’s regressed. One thing that has stuck in my mind is at Chelsea, he’s never really stood out at RB. His best seasons have been at LB under Mourinho and RCB under Conte.

Not many fullbacks can handle Sterling right now, saying that City barely created anything yesterday.

Azpi is obviously declining, his best performances have been at LB under Mourinho and in the back 3 for Conte. But I still admire his work ethic and love for the club, great person to keep at the club and for someone like Reece James to learn from.

Yup - I wrote an article about this myself about a week or so ago, after he was humiliated by Sterling when we lost 6-0. Azpi has been a great defender, but he no longer has the speed. I suspect we will go after a new full back in the Summer - unless we don't win the appeal against our transfer ban.
