For me Lingard is one of the key symptoms of the malaise that set in at Utd since Fergie's last season.
Thinks he is a superstar but is everything but. Clothing ranges, elaborate celebrations, displays of attention seeking and unearned trappings of wealth on social media are partnered by consistent performances of complete ineffectiveness in all aspects of the game of football.
The only competitions where on paper he has a decent record in his whole career is in the league cup, reserves and the championship. This belies his true level and yet he is a regular starter for us.
He turned 26 four months ago. At the same age:
Kanchelskis had won the league twice. The season we sold him he was our top goalscorer.
Beckham had won the lot and came runner up in world player of the year twice.
Nani had appeared in 2 champions league finals, benched in another and made the PFA team of the year.
Valencia had made the PFA team of the year, won the league and started in CL final.
I'll not mention Ronaldo.
All of the above (except Nani) won the Sir Matt Busby fan's player of the year award whilst occupying our right wing. Somewhere along the lines people (and managers) accepted Lingard as being the level of a player suitable for Manchester United's attack.
I keep seeing people comment that he is a good squad player. What does this mean? What utility does he carry out other than ensuring a squad number is allocated and the homegrown quota is one person closer to being fulfilled.
Lingard - Who rates him?

We haven't played with a right winger for a long time. Lingard isn't even playing on the wings. Neither is Martial.
Our lack of width is due to FBs attacking the space there, or when they do are unable to do anything with it. This has been pointed out several times.
We need to sort out the right side. Our best play in attack seems to be with both Martial and Rashford out wide as inside forwards with Lingard as a false 9. We need to improve the CM area along with the CB and FB to make it more effective.
We also need to get rid of players that do not suit the system and get in those that do. I know Lingard, McTominay are easy targets, but they're not the main reason why we're in this state. We need players to give 100% even when they're having an off day. And there are players who should be sold before Lingard.

Does lingard really give 100% everytime? Like I have said on many an occassion the lad is completely anonymous in many games we play. Gets knocked off the ball so easily. Is that a lad giving 100% because if it is then 100% we should get rid.
People saying Lingard shouldn't be sold before others. That may well be true however doesn't mean he should be devoid of criticism and should not be anywhere near the starting line up. He is the pin up that everything that Manchester United is all about at this present time. Completely average.

He looked kind of unstoppable in those few months last season. They sort of came out of nowhere and earned him an England place. That's me looking in from the outside at least.
Not sure why he never built on that, cause if he had then we'd be talking about him being one of the league's best players at the moment.

He needs to be playing the right kind of football.
He was dynamite in December when Ole took over and we were playing on the front foot, with a possession-based but direct approach and a coordinated high press.
Like many of our players, he's just very limited when we're back to sitting off, playing the waiting game and dependent on a clinical fast break transition for all of our creative activity.
I think he'd do very well under Klopp or Poch.

Perhaps.
He scored that really good goal when he went past those defenders. I didn't think he was capable of a goal like that, so he can't be too limited. Except maybe in the head.

This is the issue with Lingard for sure. He seems to be playing in no mans land where the only effect he is having on the game is allowing our RB to be exposed most of the time.
Martial certainly plays more as a winger than he does an inside forward.

Yep; we've been playing (purposefully, tactically) with a left winger or wide left-sided forward, but a deeper, more central right sided player for years now.
That's not a decision that the likes of Mkhi, Mata and Lingard have been making.

Martial plays wider and Lingard or whoever else that's played in the right plays closer to the centre.
Its why a change of tactics with Rashford and Martial out wide as the inside forwards would be better than what we are doing right now.
And while we do need to upgrade on Lingard, he isn't the most pressing matter. If we can sort out out RB, CB and CM, we'll be better for it.
Lingard's lack of strength is an issue and to be honest, he's been that way since he was a kid. He has always been lightweight.
