Sissoko - good value?

Morning all

I think most of us are now firm fans of Moussa Sissoko - he's managed to turn things around at the club, going from out on his ar5e to one of the first names on the team sheet.

Looking back, let's not forget that he cost us £32m and at the time this seemed at best like a poor value panic buy and at worst a complete waste of money!

I was wondering, given his season long form and transfer prices being as inflated as they are, do we now consider him good value? Take a look at (selected) incoming central midfielder prices over the past few seasons:

Pogba: £70
Keita: £54m
Fred: £53m
Drinkwater: £34m
Fabregas: £30m
Herrera: £32m
Kante: £32m

Sissoko: £32m

Fellaini: £29m
Wijnaldum: £24m
Gundogan: £24m
Barkley: £15m

I think at the beginning of the season when he started looking strong, we were all waiting for him to fall back down to his usual, comical self, but it just never happened! Is he now a good player or just a good scheme fit?? I certainly think he's justified his price tag but would stop short at calling him a bargain

Anyway, here's to Sissoko, may his good form long continue (once he's recovered from injury)!

This season I think Sissoko has turned it round and proved he is worth what we paid for him, however I still have nightmares about his miss at Anfield.

I think Sissoko has proved himself good enough to pull on the shirt.

He has been our most consistent player all season and other than his shooting has been excellent.

Yet there are still those supporters looking for him to fail.

It’s not so long ago certain fans wanted Son sold and calling him clown shoes. We never learn, do we

I think Jan or Toby have been BY FAR our most consistent players this season. For all the improvement (and he was coming from a LOW base) he still lacks composure, end product, goals and the ability to much more than the basics. He's still more athlete than footballer... granted a bloody good athlete

I’m still not sold on him. He’s getting a lot of praise but only because we’re judging him against the poverty player he was in his first two years. Don’t get me wrong I’m grateful that he’s stepped up to the plate and had a strong season when Dembele, Dier and Vic have all had various issues, we’d have been facked without him and the fact he’s missing against Ajax is a huge loss. But one good season in three doesn’t represent value for a £32m player and for me he remains a poor footballer who relies on his physicality but then usually lets us down when required to do something with the ball.

A good season, but not nearly as good as Dembele from 2015-2018 and he cost £15m, and not as good as Wanyama in 2016/17 who cost 11m so for me not value.

Personally I feel he has been good for two seasons now, he was phenomenal away to Madrid last season.

Ultimately I would say it has just about paid off and we could probably get £20m + for him in the summer - although I don’t want to sell

Physically he’s a monster. Ridiculous engine and he’s built like a sheitehouse door. Nobody is gonna physically dominate him. What he needs is someone beside him he can play the simple balls to, which will then transition us toward. Winks is the obvious candidate (although I do feel he sometimes has a bit of the Scott Parker’s about him). But alongside Dier or Wanyama there is very little footballing guile there. Dembele is a big loss for us, we need to add some real quality to central mid this summer.

I agree with your point about having the right pairing in CM but with someone like Winks sitting in there, do you see Sissoko just being a DM rather than the 'pivot'?

Sissoko was and is NOT good value.

Sure he's turned it around for a few months but certainly not worth the £30m and £95k a week wages he is earning.

It took till this season for Poch to give him a chance in central midfield, it's shocking he was never given that chance sooner.

I've always said he's a central midfielder, he was when he was at Toulouse where he showed big potential before he went to Newcastle and got shoved out wide.

It's about time he was given a long run in the middle of the pitch and it's showing how good he can be.

Sissoko has been our best buy of late years, better value than Sanchez who broke Levy's bank!
At the time Sissoko was a member of the French squad.
The moment we bought him he went into some kind of loss of form, lost his place in the French eleven, and basically went downhill.
Why?
My guess, only a guess, is "personal problems."
He did not feature in the WC winning squad.
Now he's back to his old form.
A driving midfield enforcer, always looking to take players on and go forward with the ball.
And, guess what ....... yup......he's back in the French eleven!
Sooner we get him back for the Ajax legs, the better.
I think, with a full squad, maybe missing Kane, we could beat Ajax.

Exactly. People making out he is a top tier player are crazy imo. His main strengths are being big, strong and fast.
As a footballer I think he is incredibly limited really but sense Spurs lack of muscle makes him a starter.
Spurs need far better to kick on. He has certainly done better than when he first arrived but I dont think that warrants him starting next season at all.

Remember its taking him this long to be half decent, and I cant see too many players in that list that would be at his level, or below, after that amount of time.
Ok....maybe Fred LOL
