Liverpool less attacking than last season

Seen plenty of people say Liverpool are less attacking this season compared to last. Well we’ve scored exactly the same amount of goals as last season with two games left to play.

Just because it isn’t the blood and thunder you score 3 we’ll score 4 of last season doesn’t mean we’ve been less attacking. We’ve been. Ore sensible in how we handle games this season, aided by a better defence, thanks to VVD, and a better keeper.

What’s also impressive is we’ve scored the same amount with Salah not hitting the same amount of goals, not that we expected him to.

We scored a lot more in the Champions League last season

Fair to say we had an easier group and run to the final, bar City.

IMO The above is correct.

CL was a really easy group and last 16 game. The semi final was goal laden too.

A group with PSG and napoli in it simply cannot compare.

Also the difference Alisson has made over and above last season... brilliant keeper.

I do feel the need to point out it was certain games last year we leaked in.

watford 3-3 on opening day
city away 0-5 (red card)
Tottenham away 1-4
Arsenal 3-3

Our record against the top half clubs last year was conceded 28 goals in 19 game... or 1.75 goals per game.

IMo the defense has improved radically with Fabinho, Alisson, VVD, Gomez all playing a part.

We have picked up way more points as we have stopped leaking goals.

I just think it’s a weird myth being perpetuated that we’ve been less attacking than last season.

Admittedly mostly by rival fans though so a tablet of salt is needed.

It's as you say OP it's not so going ho this year we've learned how to manage games much better this season.

Also I think it was true earlier in the season as we weren't scoring so much it seemed. But last 6 weeks we seem to have really found the balance of defense and back to our attacking best.

It shows nous on Klopps part as he saw we can’t be as gung ho as we were last season and challenge for the league.

Got to applaud him for that

Arsenal's invincibles drew 12 games.

were also largely unchallenged.

Its not really much of a myth as it really doesn't stack up outside the really weak CL gorup last year.

Firmino certainly hasn't been quite at races but we've done the same as last year in league.

IMO if salah isn't scoring every single game people think he's greedy and useless

Clearly we've been less attacking if we have conceded less goals this season because teams concede when they are not in position running back towards their goal instead of being solid with Virg, TAA, and Matip (Robertson does what he likes). I'm going to assume we've conceded similar number of goals this season from set pieces compared to last season. We've sat back more but scored the same number in the league because we've stretched play more and brought the opposition out more or counter-attacked.

The four teams with the least points this season are averaging 26.5 points (with two games left) whereas last season the average for the four worst teams was 33.25. This shows there are worse teams this season where you would expect to score more goals.

To conclude, we are less attacking this season as we playing more on the counter and against weaker teams.
