On this day............

In 1970

Chelsea beat Leeds United in one of the most iconic FA Cup finals of all time, in a replay at Old Trafford.

Peter Osgood equalised Mick Jones opening 35 minute goal with a fantastic diving header against the back drop of the Stretford End, with just 12 minutes remaining to take the game to extra time.

Midway through extra time David Webb popped up to nod in the winner from one of Ian Hutchinson's famous long throws, to bring a conclusion to two pulsating games!

My first taste of success as a Chelsea supporter, wiping out the memory of the 67 defeat at the hands of Tottenham.

Yes Brummie,I remember those days well, fantastic memories. I also remember '67 against Spurs, and Frank Saul I believe scored the winner,at that time one of the darkest days of my life .
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Frank Saul scored to put Spurs 2-0 up, then Tambling I think it was pulled one back. Robertson scored for Spurs as well. One of out better days.

I remember coming back from the semi-final at Hillsborough that year, I think your lot were playing at Villa Park in the semi on the same day, we all met up at a service station, bit of a rumble going on. I as usual was an innocent bystander.

Good morning all. Indeed it was a fruity game with some very industrial challenges but conversely we never saw any diving, rolling around and trying to get players sent off.

Former referee David Elleray reviewed the match in 1997, and concluded that the sides would have received six red cards and twenty yellow cards between them, if he'd been refereeing the game in that era alone - and the game's been sanitised even further than that since.

Like summer 69 I was too young to go and was also allowed to stay up late for the replay.

This is a good read about both games and sums up the mood quite well.

The replay pulled in a TV audience of over 28 million and was the 2nd largest viewing figure for any sporting event after the 66 World Cup Final right up until the England v Croatia semi final in 2018.

Sandy you should have stuck with your first love - life could have been so much better for you!

I was only 8 for that final and cried at the final whistle!

It was the first big disappointment for me after deciding I was going to supporting Chelsea around 64ish.

We were 2 nil down and Bobby Tambling pulled one back with 5 minutes left but it wasn't to be!

By the time we were relegated in 75 and saw us relegated a further twice after that I was more psychologically and emotionally mature to handle all the heartbreak they'd throw at me over the next 15 years!

Yeah, so emotionally and psychologically stable, you decided to go underwater !

I'm assuming she was a Chelsea fan Sandy?

She definitely wasn't the right girl for you mate, that household would have been like Beirut on a bad day for you both over the years. Especially after 1975.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes Brummie, she was a Chelsea fan, she lived over Peckham side, I never found out until we had been going out for about 3 months. Typical plastic, only starting supporting them when they were going on a cup run.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Me too Sandy, here was I thinking that I was signing up for some easy Glory-Hunting and then unbeknown to me and all the other Johnnie-come-lately's we were about to become very shiite within a few years and get relegated to Division 2 and spend the next 27 years winning absolute nish.

Oh apart from the Full Members and Simod Cups.

I remember when Chelsea and Man City were meeting in one of those cups, may have been Full Members, I was going over to Lords for a spot of cricket, and happened upon lots of your supporters, and City ones, aroundabout Baker Street area, getting all excited about playing at Wembley. How times have changed.

Mind you though mate we still managed to get 68,000 for the final with City, mind you that means there would have still been empty seats for the attendance stat boys on here

CFC would not be a happy bunny if he finds out Wembley was not full.
