Barcelona to bid £70m for Lacazette?

A lot of reports doing the rounds saying that Barcelona will put in a £70m bid for Lacazette this Summer.

https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1122849/Barcelona-Arsenal-70m-Alexandre-Lacazette-transfer-EXCLUSIVE

However, there are two elements to this which seem to be the root cause of this transfer rumour.

The first is that Barcelona are going to bid again for Antoine Griezmann, and if they fail in their attempts to sign him, their second-choice is Lacazette.

The other part to this are reports circulating that if we do not make the Champions League for next season, Lacazette wants to leave.

I don't know how much substance there are too these reports, or if his agent is looking to get him an improved deal at Arsenal, but let's assume it's true.

If Barcelona bid £70m for Lacazette this Summer, what should we do?

70m isn't crazy in today's crazy market. Main factor would be Arsenal and given he's got plenty of time left on his contract and one of our best players it's not a sensible deal unless we got enough to find a player of similar quality plus extra to find others.

£70m would make Lacazette something like the 8th most expensive forward ever. His goal record for Arsenal is decent but 13 and 14 league goals isn't mind blowing.

All hypothetical obviously but I'd be really surprised if Arsenal turn that down.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The problem he’s had is a lack of service. We have no wingers with any real quality and we don’t have any creative players, bar Ozil, and even then, he is only trusted in home games. So he’s had to work a lot harder and drop a lot deeper at times to create chances for himself or for others. This is why his goal tally isn’t super high.

He has still got 18 goals + 10 assists in a very average Arsenal team who lack quality and depth in key positions. He’s done well considering the circumstances.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Doing well under the circumstances doesn't scream of a Barca target to me. Which you've already addressed above tbf.

Rumours there will be a few forwards moving this summer - Dybala, Joao Felix, Icardi (albeit that's not really an option for Barca because Messi hates him) and Warner.

Staying on topic, it's doubtful that Barca will move for Lacazette.

Lacazette may want CL football, but that's squarely in his and arsenals hands as they are favourites to get to the Europa league final.

Lacazette isn't that upper echelon of player that suits Barcas attack, he's not world class. He's in the bracket below that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree with you, but Barca have gone for players that aren’t world class before. Also, I don’t see what other world class attacker there is out there who they would buy. I can’t see them going back in for Neymar due to pride + excessive cost, Mbappe would cost a bomb too, Liverpool would ask for world record fees for any of their front 3 (and they do not need to sell, whereas Arsenal may have to to increase transfer budget), Jovic & Hazard seem set to join Madrid...

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any striker they would go for who they feel they can get for a ‘reasonable’ price.

So although I agree with your assessment of Lacazette, I still think there could be legs to this rumour. Obviously I hope not.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Werner on a free
----------------------------------------------------------------------

TransferMarkt says his contract runs out in Summer 2020. Would Barca wait until January 2020 to get a pre-contract sorted knowing there would be increased competition for his signature? And besides, I thought he was set to join Bayern?

Samir

It wasn’t a Liverpool fan claiming Barca would go in for Mane and Salah instead of Lacazette tbf.

Piatek won't be at Milan long if his form holds either.

Then there's the ongoing Greizemann rumours.

Can see a few options for Barca. Few options if Arsenal needed to replace Laca as well.

Dybala is a good shout actually. I reckon he'd probably be taking over from Suarez.

Joao Felix is an attacking midfielder isn't he? Saw an article saying that City's representatives have been speaking to his parents. That kid has the pick of all the top clubs.

Icardi is too hot-headed and a massive drama queen. We saw what happened when Barca had someone like that in Ibrahimovic. Not worth the risk.

And Messi hates him

Can't claim to be an expert on Joao Felix but I thought he was essentially someone who could play any of the front 3 roles. Andy Brassell (journalist I have a bit of time for) seriously rates the kid. You're right though, he has the pick of clubs.

I do think there are some interesting forwards options for the huge clubs (like Barca) without going back for Neymar or the obvious (and too expensive) Mbappe.

Also the continuing rumour that Lewandowski wants a new challenge and Bayern might be ready to sell (if they get Warner).

If I was 100% confident the money will be reinvested wisely, I'd say sell him and try to get as much as you can from Barca (+£100M). This is what Pool did with Couthino and it wored for them.
The problem is that I don't trust our owner to make the funds available or the manager to reinvest wisely.

Strange comment. Money made from sales has always been reinvested into the team since 2013.

Things have changed since then. He now owns 100% of the club and don't have to publish account.
I'm not saying this will happen but wouldn't be surprised if it does
