Owen Hargreaves Performance/Goal

Great goal from Hargo, sounds like a great performance too from him. I really really want to be so happy for him. But it felt so strange to see him smash in a 25 yarder in a blue shirt. Part of me is delighted to see the lad back on a pitch after all the hard luck, but part of me remembers how me and all the other reds kept paying his wages while he was he was on the sidelines for so long. I completely understand it was us who let him go and he is free to join whoever he wants. I also agree that city were the best club to make him an offer and can not blame him for signing. But I really am struggling with these mixed emotions!! Anybody else agree/disagree? reds and blues let me know!

Good luck to the lad, but I'll sow my ass if he's not injured in the very near future

Mixed feelings: It reminds me a bit of the time (eeh when I were a lad!) Denis Law "back-heeled" United into the second division. That had to be the biggest case of mixed feelings ever.

"I haven't a clue why we would let him go if he is fit again"

Agreed. He is exactly the type of player we were looking for over the summer.

I really don't see the logic in keeping hold of, and paying him for 3 years when he's injured. Then when we have the opportunity to keep him for free, and only pay him when he play's we offload him. Utter madness IMO.

I have a sneaky suspicion he'll come back to haunt us this season...

"but he didn't."

True. The misconception around this exists because on the morning of the United-City game, it was still mathematically possible for United to avoid relegation. They were 3 points behind Birmingham with 2 games left to play (Birmingham had one game left). And because of an inferior goal difference to Birmingham, United effectively needed two wins and for Birmingham to lose their final game.

United knew that they had to beat City to stand a chance of staying up. But it transpired that Birmingham won their last game anyway, meaning that even if United had beaten City, they would have still been relegated.

So it is incorrect to state that Law's goal sent United down. What isn't incorrect to state was that at the time the game was being played, the players (and probably most, if not all, of the fans) would have no idea how the Birmingham game was playing out. It's for this reason that Law was so distraught after scoring his goal. To him (and everyone else in Old Trafford), at that precise moment in time it felt as though he had effectively relegated United.

Hence why a lot of significance was placed upon Law's goal. Hence why the misconception about its actual significance exists for many.

No he didn't they were already down, but another nail in the coffin didn't hurt.

I will chose to believe it sent them down! It gives me warm happy feelings

It's chiselled into my memory as the goal that sent them down and always will be.

As a United fan. I can honestly say I'm happy for the guy. He really had to take City's offer and I hope he can get his career back on track.

Saying that, I wouldn't mind him never winning another medal (unless it's with England).

Im very happy to see him back playing again. Awesome goal too for his return. It was almost written in the stars!

He was an exceptional talent when i first saw him playing for Bayern Munich.

It'll be fitting if he played against his former club - a club where his career took off.

I hope the best is yet to come from him.

He was my favourite England player at the 2006 World Cup. His desire, hunger, determination, will to win.
The best thing about him was he was NOT born in England yet gave everything for England!

I wish him well for the future.
