1971 Chelsea won their 1st European Trophy, beating Real Madrid 2 – 1 in Athens, Greece in a replay of the European Cup Winners Cup Final, with the 1st game taking place just two nights before.
Thousands of Chelsea Fans stayed over, sleeping in the streets of the Greek capital for the replay but were repaid for their efforts, when unlikely hero John Dempsey crashed home a spectacular volley for Chelsea’s 1st just after the half hour.
Fan favourite Peter Osgood doubled our lead a little over 5 minutes later with a perfectly placed effort from outside the box that crept just inside the post.
The Spaniards halved the deficit with 15 minutes left but The Blues hung on to claim the trophy.
An ecstatic, barely 12 year old Brummieblue did cartwheels around the house and wore a smile a mile wide for days!
