I was at the pub with a few mates last night which always leads to footy debates and the subject of wage caps came into it. It’s something that we all agreed on which has never happened. A variety of allegiances all being top 6 and a West Ham and Leeds fan.
First of all it’s just opinions and there is no context to what we were saying but to have top 6 fans, the tier below top 6 and a championship club all agree that this idea would be better speaks volumes to me that the majority of fans really want to see a wage cap come in.
Problems are with it is it has to be across the board globally. Otherwise players (agents) will always find an excuse to say the league that pays the highest wage is the best in the world and they will all flock there and the plague continues. FIFA would need to rally the governing body’s and state that any not abiding is excluded from anything FIFA related, I understand this already means it will never happen.
Our idea that we came up with in 20 minutes so a few holes to deal with no doubt; 7-10 years time the wage cap drops to 50k a week maximum. After tax you are looking at 1.4m a year. To play football. Anyone under 18 still not classed as an adult can’t really complain about how unfair it is that generations before them earned a fortune plus anyone brave enough to say that isn’t enough publicly will surely be cast out anyway.
Those who are 18 in the game (the youngest affected with a say) know they have 7-10 years to make a fortune before dropping down to 50k where they still can’t complain as it will be even across the board. It genuinely becomes fair.
There’s many other plot holes and discrepancies which we delved into but this is a football forum so hopefully the same debate will take place on here. The more people talk about it the more chance that football becomes fair.
Other points not noted
Top 6 with big fanbases. Players will flock to so the pick of the bunch end up there anyway
Ticket prices have no reason not to come down
West Ham fans are the most disagreeable fans
Players no longer need to leave clubs (not necessarily a good thing)
Thoughts and ideas please fellas and the girl behind the bar had huge Bristol’s

The price of watching football on tv in the UK is appalling and not only that you can only watch a small selection of games each week. Cap how much they can charge or even only give it to free to air channels
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Then all the players will go to Spain / Italy / Germany / China or the US and the quality of football you'll watch will decline rapidly.
Why not just go watch a non-league game if you're worried about cost?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
this is a joke yeah?

How so? No such thing as a free lunch...

Well my understanding is that it's far cheaper to watch football on your TV in Spain, Italy and Germany so you don't lose out in that sense - It would just equalize how much Prem clubs receive vs their European neighbors in league tv rights revenue
The US and China are for joke players who are either over the hill or not worth the trouble

Even the football league can be shown to the rest of Europe (and uk) for a subscription of £110 a year or £10 a game outside the hours of 14:45 - 17:15 on Saturdays using Ifollow.

Yeah I live overseas and to be honest am probably overpaying at the equivalent of about 7 pound per month for all PL, CL, Europa and Internationals live and on demand plus long and short highlights.
The UK is an insane ripoff for its resident football fans. (I'm from the UK, just don't live their atm, from the outside you really see how much of a shambles it really is)

NBA and other US sports are not sports as we have them. They are business franchises bought sold and moved. No promotion or relegation so the onus is on financial success at least as much as on field victories. Not a great model for a global sport.

American sports don’t have a blanket wage cap for individuals either, some of the highest paid players in sport are in America. Their model is actually pretty good but it’s just not transferable to football across the globe. Wage caps will never happen in football as the clubs won’t allow it.

I agree with this because I'm a fan, but realistically it's 99% impossible nowadays. Money has moved the game on far too much nowadays, some for the better, some for the worse.
Bit like the Champions League argument for those saying it should only be for the "Champions" of the country. Fair enough, I get the point, but it's all money making now so it will never go back to how it once was. Again, football has moved on too much.
Also, a political point, even though some earn ridiculous amounts these days, these footballers still pay tax to the country like any working class man. So where does the rest of the money go for those players who earn £50k a week+?

There’s ways round wage caps so it’s pointless
