Today saw Liverpool continue our preseason campaign with a 3-1 win against Bradford City. The game took on more importance than the result or fitness! This was two clubs coming together to help support Stephen Darby, the unyielding right-back who represented them both.
Darby was diagnosed with Motor Neurone’s Disease last September. He has handled a dreadful situation with dignity and the esteem in which he is held was reflected in the ovation he received before kick-off following his incredibly emotional address to a 24,343 sell-out crowd from the pitch.
It was the highest attendance since Valley Parade was reopened in 1986 and the gate receipts – plus £1 from every programme that was sold – will go to the Darby Rimmer Foundation, which was established with fellow sufferer Chris Rimmer last autumn.
On top of that, the James Milner Foundation gave £30,000 to the fund, as well £10,000 to the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Well done all.
Football was’nt the most important thing

Terrible thing to have diagnosed at such a young age. I am glad he is able to spin this positive event out of it.

It's good to see that he still appears to be functioning quite normally despite having the condition for nearly a year. I can't imagine being in that situation but he is handling it remarkably well. Sounds like a genuinely nice guy who is still more worried about other people than himself despite what he is going through.

Didn’t realize he has a motor neurone disease. Very sad.
Diseases like this, that destroy the body, or the likes of Alzheimer’s or dementia which take the mind, are straight up horrific.
I work with folks with intellectual and developmental disabilities and something like Downs, which has a high comorbidity with Alzheimer’s is just soul crushing to witness as folks age.

Great article KLS. Motor Neurones really is a horrific disease, something I’ve seen first hand unfortunately.
As for the person who decided to 1 star this, do everyone a favour and smash your head against the wall, thanks

The article I read had a video and you can actually see that he’s already started to be affected by his hands.
Terribly sad.

Such a horrible disease. Just hope he has many years of some sort of normality before it gets very bad.

All the best to him and Rimmer as well.
Facking frustrating and sad. We need to stretch the boundaries to find cures for things like this IMO.
