A new dawn

Another season about to start.

I pretty much missed the last one. I will spare you the details save to say that since we kicked off last season I have had major surgery, six months drug therapy and have twice travelled from Bretby to the Pireilli Stadium suites to celebrate the lives of departed close family and friend. I hope that I am excused my lack of particiaption on this site in the circumstances!

But my treatment is considered a success and so I am looking forward to the new season.

The road ahead is always affected by the journey we have been on so I thought I would try a "on this day" article to kick start a bit of a chat.

We last started the season on 3rd August in 2013. It started badly and we were two behind in 32 minutes at Cheltenham Town before a Billy Kee penalty and a debut goal for Rory Delap earned us a 2-2 draw. The BBC briefly published a 3-2 win on Final Score though this proved to be inaccurate. Pretty sure that the moment of confusion was later summarised by Gary Rowett as Phil Edwards rising "like a salmon" to head the winner only to make contact with the ball as if he was still in the tin!

Also making his debut that day was a young goalkeeper by the name of Jordan Pickford. Exciting to think that one or more of this years crop of young loanees might go on to achieve in the way that he has. Adam Reed was also on debut. One of only three league starts for us if you are struggling to recall the name.

Matty Palmer came off the bench for what was at the time only his fourth senior appearance. Only six subs named, so a small squad is nothing new!

Former Brewer Russell Penn was in the Cheltenahm line up.

Here is hoping that today really does mark a new dawn. It has been a while since we managed a win on opening day so we are due one.

Wishing you all a happy and exciting season.

Come on you Brewers!
