On Wednesday Wolves welcome Championship side Reading to Molineux for what will be the home side’s first EFL Cup game this season.
Currently in 20th place in the league, Reading have won only 2 of their 8 league games to date. To arrive at this match, previous rounds of the EFL Cup have seen them take wins against Wycombe Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle.
Wolves too have had a poor start to their league season and have yet to record their first victory having drawn 4 of the first 6 games.
With no Europa League game this week there is a chance for Nuno Espirito Santo to rest some of his top players, some of whom are looking a little worse for wear after playing more games than any other Premier League team since the start of the season.
Their Herculean effort on Sunday at Selhurst Park, rescuing a last gasp point after being reduced to 10 men will not have helped and Nuno will almost certainly ring the changes for this game, possibly even utilising one or two U23 players.
Last season Wolves only played 2 EFL Cup games, losing the second one to Premier League rivals Leicester City on penalties. This season, despite having Europa League commitments, Nuno will be looking to drive his side on to better things.
If Royals manager José Manuel Gomes is looking for any leniency from Wolves he is definitely looking in the wrong place. The approach for this game will be the same as for all games regardless of the competition or the opposition – analyse, train, prepare and play to win.
The Royals won’t be best pleased to Matt Doherty in the line-up. When Wolves last played Reading in the league, Wolves won home and away with goals from Doherty and Cavaleiro in the 2-0 win at the Madejski Stadium and 2 from Doherty plus 1 from Benik Afobe giving the home side the 3-0 win at Molineux.
Gem’s prediction 3-0

I can see Jose getting the Spurs job after Pockets leaves. They probably deserve each other..........

Spurs have done well for several years, a top four club throughout but certainly feels like they are coming to the end of this short era and with Poch probably finished very soon one way or another sen and Kane also probably going the same way it will be interesting to see where they go then.
Agree regarding the Champions League, nice honour but i have never felt it tells you who the best is, much as Liverpool are clearly a good side they are currently on a run in that competition where they have lost 7 of the last 16 games they have played but yet they are the 'champions of Europe'!?!?

Be interesting to see where Jose goes next. Seemed to have lost the plot in recent years, and the style of football his teams play seems outdated now. At his best he was a good results manager. But when the football played is so boring, if you aren't getting results then the support from the terraces and club goes away very quickly. Good as he has been I would hate to see him at Wolves

The thing is, although I am no fan of Mourinho or his style of play; a manager of his standing would probably help us bring in better quality players. Would we have been more likely to get deals for players like Ruben Dias and Franck Kessie over the line qith a manager with a higher reputation?
Mourinho is always a short term appointment, but if he can increase the clubs standing in that short term, it might not be a bad thing in a long term plan.

Not that Mourinho is a realistic option for us anyway.

Quite like Spurs though, prefer them to most of the others.

I'd play 3-4-3 in this one again. Obviously make a lot of changes, but one player who I would be giving game time to is Neves. I think he has been poor for the most part this season and has spent most of his time too deep.
Play him in the system from the first half yesterday, get him to play higher and see if we can get some of that form and confidence back.
It would be good to see us try an alternative to Coady (although we probably won't and I expect to see COady there), as I think Dendoncker would be good in the back three. Nice to see some of the more promising youngsters included too such as Jordao, Kilman, Shabani and Sanderson.
I'd go:
-----------------------Ruddy
--------Vallejo --Dendoncker -- Kilman
Doherty ----- Neves -- Jordao ------ Vinagre
------------------------MGW
-----------------Cutrone -- Neto
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was pretty close with this. Just swap Dendoncker for Bennett.
