Hampden and Hand Baws

I'll leave the match review to nnh who always does a great post on that but wanted to comment on two specifics.

First of all, the stadium.

Rocked up yesterday at about ten minutes to kick off. Queued for less than five minutes and straight in..brilliant.

Thought the atmosphere yesterday was great. Maybe some questionable song choices for some but noisy all around the stadium with even the Hibs fans contributing briefly when they thought they might avoid a pummeling.

5.30 kick off was great and should be the standard for semis and finals in that trophy. The old stadium lends itself to big matches under the floodlights.

Unfortunately I need to comment on the penalty Celtic were denied. I've said on here for a few years that Bobby Madden is the best ref in the country. Got some abuse originally but I think a number of posters would now agree. He tries to be impartial and keep the game moving and isn't overly fussy or officious. In fact, I don't remember a better scottish referees. Certainly none of the Dallas brigade...all rubbish to a man.

He had a decent game yesterday but how he denied Celtic a stone wall penalty I will never know. I saw it from the other end of the stadium. TV shows that Madden was perfectly placed and saw it.

By either the old rules or the new ones, that's a penalty.

The only conclusion I can come to is that he saw it and just decided to not to give it.

Thoughts from anyone else at the game or viewing on telly?

Think I’d prefer that VAR was used like tennis.

You get maybe 2 or 3 calls each. How often does a professional referee make awful calls in the one game?

Wullie Collum? 😂

Even him.

Has he had more than 6 bad calls in one game that resulted in a goal/non goal.

And even if so; and it’s proven by VAR, down the leagues he goes. Win win..

The use of VAR to disallow ‘Pool’s perfectly ONside “goal” yesterday was farcical, as all subsequent analysis has confirmed. Using the mental Stockley Park reasoning, the armpit was only offside because the dotted line they drew wasn’t even vertical!!! I suspect that was added after the event to cover up the clear howler. It was also based on a horizontal line drawn at the Villa defender’s foot ... in spite of images clearly showing his KNEE was clearly far closer to his own goal, so surely that has to be the measuring point?

As for Madden’s (or his lino’s) failure to see/give us a blatant pen yesterday, well it couldn’t have been any clearer. The non-offside was wrong too, altho it was half a yard and far less of a howler.

It’s the offside rule which is flawed. To me it should mean clear daylight between attacker and defender. If there isn’t, he should be deemed onside.

Measuring people’s armpits, hands and toes ffs. Ridiculous.

Youve either got your opponent covered or you’ve not. If in doubt don’t let him hang on your shoulder.

Ginger ... Tend to agree, but it doesn’t help when they’ve got Stevie Wonder looking at VAR at Stockley Park. Firmino was ONside, even using their own rules.

Who cares about shoulders or arms being ahead? If your feet are in line and you’ve managed to gather such a huge advantage from just being able to angle your body then the defender never stood a chance.

Track the boots with hawk-eye type technology. If the attackers boot is ahead of the defenders it’s offside
