What other option does he have? We have next to zero aerial presence outside our collection of CBs. Every single ball we boot up the pitch is lost.

It isn't always about winning the first ball. And when Martinez plays we see a massive difference in the range of passing. We are usually a more offensive team when Martinez plays.

Distribution out from the back doesn't have to be a long ball or trying to play out from the 'back' there are other options if the movement is good. We need wingers not wing-backs and the ability to get the ball to them quickly.

Yes, that's how he had the reserve team playing. Lots of pressing and playing out from the back too.

The worst thing about Leno is it is almost every single time and no variety. That just means there is no jeopardy in the opponents pressing.
With Martinez, he changes it around and gives opponents something to think about. That means when he does play it short, the opposition aren't neccesarily pushed up.

So long as he realises the need to have a midfield/wingers to help the defenders play out from the back we should be ok, trying to play out from the back (and often through the middle) when you have no real midfield was Emery's stupidity.

I know this will come across as unfair on Emi, but anyone could look good playing against non-PL sides.

I'd like to see him repeatedly try to find an outlet while playing with teammates who don't even want the ball.

DON'T act like Ozil wasn't playing/being utter sh!t for a good season and a half at least before Emery even got here (PR stunt YouTube clips don't count as form). It's amazing how his fanboys have all crawled out of the woodwork again now and are trying to pretend he was outstanding the whole time before Emery got here and Emery somehow made him play poorly.

That ISN'T what happened. He was sh!t and lazy for all of AW's last season and most of the one before that. Emery arrived and had the balls to bench him for it where Wenger didn't/didn't want to. Emery didn't stifle Ozil's game and make him poor. Ozil was already established as a no good lazy for nearly 2 YEARS.

You could argue that defensively he has always been a lazy player, at every club he's been at.
