Manchester United's attempt to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes has stalled because the clubs cannot agree a fee.
Sporting are demanding 80m euros (£68m) for the 25-year-old, which United are unwilling to pay.
Talks continue between the clubs for a player rated at 45m euros by Tottenham Hotspur last summer.
United have not ruled out targeting alternatives having made a priority of looking at midfield options this month.
However, they will only look at existing targets and with two weeks remaining before the transfer window closes, Fernandes remains their first choice.
United have told Sporting a deal will not be done unless they drop the fee.
Solskjaer and his assistant Mike Phelan watched Fernandes play against FC Porto on 5 January.

All football clubs are run as businesses tbf. If they weren't, they'd go under sooner, rather than later. It's just that out football club aren't getting the football side of things right, through how we go about our business and how the club is run from top to bottom
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Another buzzword.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The only buzzword for you is Ed tbf. You're a self appointed defender of anything and everything that involves how this football club is run. Yet why have the likes of Liverpool and Leicester been able to overhaul us in a fraction of our budget? Why is top 4 a holy grail now, when in fact, with our budget, it should be a given? And it's a holy grail we seem to miss more often than not, no matter who the manager is. Make that 4 managers now.
I can think of a few buzzwords to describe your constant defence of the undefendable, believe me. But facts don't lie, at the end of the day. And the facts show how well we are being run as a football club
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sorry if my stance upsets you (although I dont see why it should) But i only counter the nonsense spouted on here.
City and Liverpool overhauled us because we have appointed the wrong managers post SAF and they hve bought badly. It really is as simple as that.

Financially it's a good deal when you consider Pep wanted to sign him for £60m just 6 months earlier PLUS wages.
We were all buzzing at the signing of Sanchez. None of us foresaw how hed turn out.

What? We appointed the managers? The club did this? Or did they appoint themselves? Brilliantly run club 👍.
And there is a lot more wrong with this football club than the (4) managers, let's be honest

That has nothing to do with Ed or how the football club is run. The manager was responsible for sorting out all the financial aspects of that deal. Stop being silly

SAF and Gill appointed Moyes.
Woodward appointed LVG as he was the best available at the time.
Woodward appointed Jose as we needed a winner.
Woodward appointed Ole to try get rid of the toxicity surrounding the club.
Now, Woodwards first 2 appointments were relatively succesful, but L G was terrible in the transfer market and Jose wasnt great.

Apparently we're trying to out in stupid Adonis again like CL and ballon d'or. It's lunacy and disrespects Sporting undedstanding of the game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t see any problem with trying to out in Adonis if it helps secure a player with a great reputation for distributing free Bakker flaming into midfield.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuanzebe’s absence has been the main issue on this front. And I say that as a United fan.

They were successfully, but I believe they were wrong for us. It is possible to be both.
And how has appointing Ole got Woodward an easy ride exactly?
