De Gea - Stats prove nothing

Before the season started critics were throwing the stat around that De Gea had conceded the most goals from outside the area in La Liga last season. This was used to make out that he was not a good keeper and dodgy with shots from distance. The thing that wasn't taken into consideration were the quality of the strikes he faced...now you can see them all for yourselves.

All goals conceded from outside the penalty area by De Gea last season.

Lolz, all the numbers are on backwards.

It's either a spoof video or they were all own goals then.

Or there's a satanic message hidden there somewhere. Have you tried playing it backwards?

most of those goals are from like 19 yards out as well, there was me thinking he conceded from like 30 yards out!

Did the other goalies in the league not face similar shots then?

It doesn't matter how you look at it, he still conceded the most goals from outside the area - the stat is still 100% correct.

Statistically De Gea is the best keeper in the prem this season.

kramthered,

Statistically De Gea is the best keeper in the prem this season.

This is very true.

But in contrast, Man Utd's best defender is Johnny Evans, in 8th.

They occupy the top 2 positions in midfield (Young & Nani).

And Rooney is also the top striker.

I reckon only 2 of them were saveable !! Great strikes in there.

I think De Gea has had a decent start – yes he has made a couple of high profile error but he seems to have overcome them and has made some outstanding saves – However there were some incidents that made me worry a bit on Saturday –
1) Should have come for the cross that crouch scored from
2) Was lucky in the second half to get a free kick when De Lap barely touched him
3) Went in with his feet like a woman when he should have been brave and claimed the ball with his hands rather than risk letting the ball ricochet anywhere
4) Couple of times when he had goal kicks he was in no rush to take them despite the fact we were drawing he didn’t sprint to retrieve the ball or seem bothered that we were at risk of dropping points

The point is that all the people who used this stat as proof that he was a bad keeper were not thinking about the fact that the shots he conceded were for the most part unsavable. If a shots unsavable it shouldn't be a slight on the keeper.
Also I never said the stat wasn't correct I said it proves nothing about his ability.

Stats prove something as long as it serves your propaganda. Stats like "De Gea had conceded the most goals from outside the area in La Liga last season" are excellent to create a mass media circus while stats like "No goalkeeper made more saves than De Gea from shots inside the penalty area this weekend" are deemed as useless

The Mexicutioner

But were the shots unstoppable from De Gea's poistioning, or just unstoppable?

If you're going to use stats in a debate - then this stat is still accurate, as all other goalies would have faced the same players.

Screen,

Your stat re: saves inside the box is also a good stat to use. But i imagine most goalies & their respective teams would rather the better stats over the course of the season - not just in one match.
