Police are investigating claims of a racially-aggravated assault at Manchester United’s football stadium, after a 19-year-old hospitality worker said he was attacked by security guards and left with a fractured eye socket as he tried to get to work at the ground. Greater Manchester police confirmed on Tuesday that they were looking into a report of a public order offence and assault by two men at Old Trafford on 27 February.
The community interest company Kids of Colour said the alleged victim had been called “a slave" before being slammed against a wall and hit in the stomach by guards who disputed that he worked at the stadium.

Take-aways from this:
1) We should all defer drawing definitive conclusions as the accusation is pending investigation.
2) ...but we do know that an Old Trafford worker was prevented from legitimately entering the stadium by security guards.
3) If the racist behaviour on the part of the security guards is true, then it's a scandal and the club must come down very hard on it.
4) Possible wider moral of the tale: the security guards worked for an outsourced company; the allegedly assaulted stadium worker worked for an outsourced catering company. The kind of atomisation of the workforce you get from outsourcing services makes it much harder to create a sense of organisation culture with expected behaviour, sense of community, sense of buy-in. Rogue behaviour of this sort (while still the personal responsibility of the individuals involved) is way more likely when business and the state outsource services to companies that maximise profits by paying workers as little as possible, in the process driving down skills, pride in work, and the time and resources to do an adequate job. In the old model where everyone was employed directly by club, these kinds of conflicts would be much less likely and bad behaviour would have been much easier to detect and address.
