It was 5000/1 actually.

Either way you’re likely looking at a mid - high 90 points to challenge for the title at the moment, perhaps even more. Whether you want to call that closing an X point gap or not, as much as United are a team in the ascendency I’m not sure the squad is quite there yet myself. Plenty to be optimistic about from a United perspective though.

He’s better off at Dortmund than United or Chelsea.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not financially he won't. And anyway we'll be challenging next season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're closing a 37 point gap in one season?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone starts on zero points
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes I'm not talking about a literal gap I'm talking about what that gap represents in terms of the difference in quality between two sides
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What's the points difference since we signed Bruno?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1 point over 5 games which is of course promising but also a dangerously small sample size
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yet more relevant than the difference before we signed him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I disagree.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well you are daft then. You are talking about how we are going to close a 37 point gap and not taking into consideration the fact that we have already signed a player that has helped solve a huge issue of us having no creativity. There is also the fact that Pogba has been missing all season. But whatever.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, I'm not talking about the literal points gap. I'm talking about what that points gap represents in terms of the gap in quality between the two sides. And I think 24 games where you are without a player says more about your squad than 5 games with that player.
If you disagree and are now riding a high due to your recent results and are genuinely expecting to challenge than more power to you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think that we will challenge for the title next season, barring an incredible summer. Just pointing out that we've already made headway in reducing the 37 point gap in signing Bruno. Pogba being available would also have an impact
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Reckon we'll get the 37 point gap down to 0 by the start of next season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This notion of talking about a "points gap" to represent quality is just stupid. That points gap is based on a whole load of different factors throughout the season including Liverpool being lucky with VAR, injuries etc. Talk about other factors if you want the but the fact that you are 37 points ahead does not give a gage of how much improvement united need.

Yeah I think that's fair. I'd certainly expect us to be a lot closer next season. The fact that the main issue has been results against lesser teams means there are a lot more "easy" points to be gained, than if we were getting smashed every time we faced a good side. But then, that can flip reverse just as easily

I'm saying that you can't use the points gap as a barometer of squad "quality" and ability to challenge for the title next year. There are alot of factors that go into the points gap. Comparing quality of squad, united should have bested Liverpool directly in the first leg and could have done more in the second. Had other circumstances gone in different directions then the points gap would have been a lot closer. If you want to assess quality find other metrics or compare players like for like. Saying that adding Sancho wont bridge the "37 points gap" is just nonsense.

Comparing players like for like doesn’t mean much when talking about the ability of a team to compete for the league. Points do matter. Especially when the points total needed to win the league in the prem is over 90 points.
I don’t think Liverpool will finish as far in front next season. But they’ll still finish miles in front of us.
