Exactly.
Sensible approach and one you would undertake with one of your own staff unless you found something more sinister behind it. But again that would be up to the employer to interrogate before if necessary handing it over to the police or other professionals.
Once he’s been dealt with I think an apology for causing any offence would seem appropriate.
