Ah yes..another lockdown thread. I was wondering if there’s any popular/famous goals in football that you personally are underwhelmed by?
I’m talking goals that you’ve seen hyped up by the media or friends, and you watch it, and think ‘was that it?’. Them goals you read about in an article, described in glorious detail, then you type it in YouTube and just aren’t that impressed. Goals you can somewhat appreciate the skill involved but don’t give you the wow feeling. Or, for want of a better word, goals you find ‘overrated’ (tried to avoid using that word ).
I got the idea from seeing this Ronaldinho goal crop up again: https://twitter.com/regista/status/1254708104186531840?s=21
I’ve seen it before, and despite it being described in the tweet as one of the best goals of his career, it doesn’t give me a massive wow factor. It just doesn’t look that aesthetic to me, almost a bit scrappy. Like watching Calvert Lewin’s overhead kick earlier this season (first goal https://twitter.com/goal/status/1231858256873709570?s=20)
Another goal that’s always underwhelmed me is Ronaldo’s free-kick vs Portsmouth : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=t0dgGSFWhno
TBH this is the one i’d argue most is just an objectively overrated goal and not just me being subjectively weird (at least for the most part). Definitely one of them ones I kept hearing everyone go on about the weekend it was scored, I watched it on MOTD thinking..’really’. Obviously a good free kick but good free kicks are scored multiple times a season. I just wouldn’t class it as a special free kick I think.. I can appreciate looking back though how it’s a nice symbolic goal of Ronaldo’s career. The 7 kit, the run up, the stance. But an example of a free kick I think is truly soecial (and tbf also gets its fair share of appreciation) is Payet vs Palace (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tEdGiVDlbVA).
I feel like the next two are gunna be very controversial but here we go 🤷🏿♂️
Back to Ronaldinho. His ‘05 CL goal vs Chelsea : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fygu4KrxJqc
One that features on most people’s favourite Ronnie goals / CL goals, or even overall best goals of most time. I can appreciate the cheekiness and nonchalance of it, especially in such a big game. And can appreciate looking back on it as a great symbolic goal for Ronaldinho. But I definitely always feel anomalous in I never feel thatwowed by the goal. I think it’s perhaps the slow flight of the ball, I don’t know.
Di Canio’s volley vs Wimbledon: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bwL-QDZg2BY
I can’t even explain this one. I can fully appreciate the technique but..it just never gives me that same wow factor as other goals that you’ll see alongside it when you ask most about their best all-time PL goals. Not sure why.
Oof, feel like I’ve got something off my chest with those revelations on Di Canio’s and Ronaldinho’s Chelsea goal. Any goals that you have same feeling about?

Ricky Villa in the 81 cup final. A dine goal but it was the commentator who said 'he's taking them all on' which overrates it for me.
That said, watching live as a 9 year old boy was as good as I'd seen at the time.

I think goals like that, the context has to be accounted for. To do that in a cup final adds to it. Same with the Giggs goal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah 100% though imo Giggs' goal would have still been a great one if it was a league game against Burnley

Wasn't just the occasion of the game being a semi final that elevated Giggs' goal though, I think it was also the fact it was just an amazing match from start to finish. Really end-to-end, Bergkamp having the chance to win it from the spot in the last minute, etc. It was a fitting climax to a superb game that had already had you on the edge of your seat for the whole night. It deserved that goal.

Also Ronaldos overhead vs Juventus is the worst overhead I have ever seen.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow seriously? I suppose Zidane’s volley was also the worst volley you’ve ever seen?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
* looks at profile and recognised that it’s a Utd fan coming to defend his beloved
He literally miss-kicks it and scuffs it into the corner. I can easily name you 10 better overhead kicks in the PL alone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It has nothing to do with being a United fan, many non united fans on this thread alone have agreed that it was an amazing goal. Not to mention you said it was the worst you have ever seen? Ludicrous comment
Miss kicks it and scuffs it into the corner? Am I looking at something completely different??

literally one non-Utd fan agreed. It’s just an acrobatic scuff

This won't be popular, but Beckham v Wimbledon. Pro footballer kicks football quite far in a straight line. It's a good goal and I do like how it hits the net without bouncing but it never ever made me go 'wow'.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep can’t believe I forgot about this one, easily one of the most overrated PL goals along with Rooney’s vs West Ham and Petrov vs Derby. Rooney’s goal vs West Ham as an Everton player was better than all 3 but never gets talked about. Also I remember a Wigan player scored a ridiculous goal from a free kick in his own half which was better than them all too.

Ridiculous goal. For me what makes that so good is that the keeper had no chance even though it was such a long shot. Lots of the other half way line shots the keeper either stumbles or gets twisted and turned this is just an unbelievable BLAST

Ronaldo’s free-kick was a screamer but it’s not my favourite of his. I preferred the long-ranger at Porto for a start. The team goal on the break at Arsenal in the 09 CL semi is probably my personal favourite Ronaldo goal.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
at least he scored unlike the Pele effort that went wide that is regarded as some kinda genius
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Haha yeah I agree. There's also the other famous Pele miss where he rounds the keeper without touching the ball but still puts it past the post. Never understood why those misses are so celebrated.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
exactly, that was against Uruguay I think.
Terribul miss brought about by a poor decision too let the ball roll across him instead of pushing it into the net in front of the gk.
Pele was all about gol volume, not flamboyant skill.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pele wasnt flamboyant? Aha hahaha. Dear lord, you are way off. He loved a nutmeg and a rabona, and a step over and sticking it round one side of the player and going the other. He absolutely loved a trick.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
no man.
Pele was merly a tap-in merchant.
whenever he tried a skillz move, it aint never worked.

I'll assume you're just wumming. If not you are clueless
