due to injury.
Obviously Brazilian Ronaldo is who many will think of when this topic comes up but I was watching highlights of Dortmund vs Real Madrid the other evening (the game where Lewandowski scores 4). 2 other players really stood out for me though. Gundogan and Reus.
Both players looked sensational back then. Gundogan was looking like one of the best midfielder in Europe and Reus was looking like one of the best attackers. Then injuries hit for both.
While both have returned and seemingly have gotten over their injury woes in recent seasons neither have really been the same.
Gundogan has had a decent time at City but he’s a bit of a squad player now and is no longer that explosive midfielder that drove forward and went past players.
Reus has also returned to a decent standard the last few years but hasn’t been the same and missed out on so much for club and country and will not go down as the great he could have been.
I suppose other obvious examples are Hargreaves, Owen, Torres etc.
Any other potentially top players that had their careers curtailed by injury woes?
Players that didn’t reach their potential

U20 world cup isn’t really the barometer of ability. Everything I’ve seen, and read, of Adu suggests that he really just wasn’t a particularly good footballer. The hype didn’t help, but it also created a legend around his ability that he just did not possess.

Fair enough. I never got the fuss, albeit from limited viewing.

He started off pretty well at Barca, to be fair. Just didn’t kick on and signing Eto’o finished him off there.
