Decent article in the grauniad about wingers. A little uk biased it must be said though.
Amazing to think Stanley Matthews performed to such an age and if anything seemed to improve in his latter years.
Also crazy that 2 wee guys that lived less than 500 metres from each other would end up number 2 & 3. Scotland really had an abundance of quality wingers throughout the 60-80s.
Anybody notable exceptions?
Greatest wingers

In an era of Eusebio charlton Best Cruyff loads of world class players didn’t win such awards
Rangers and Celtic were at the top table in those times
Many of the players were the very best around
Baxter Henderson Johnstone McNeil and probably others ( I’m just a young chap so can’t speak of them all)
The term world class annoys me as it creates such debate and arguments
But in the 60s quite a few played in Scotland including Johnstone
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is a term which is pinned on players way too easily and this is why I cannot agree with Johnstone being placed at that level - he just wasn't world class despite the protestations of several.

Well at a time in history where Celtic were amongst the the top teams in the world it’s more than probable their star player was at that level

So would you agree with your pals on here that Johnstone is the best winger of all time?

I think you are right Duke, at that time Celtic had (probably) the best manager in the world and Jimmy was the team's standout player.
Celtic and Rangers both had great home-grown players back then and a few of us were lucky to see them live.

It's a bit of a circular pointless argument *. Comparing footballers from different generations is very, very difficult. For example, I remember one of the Lisbon Lions being asked how they do against Rangers nine-in-a-row team. He said he thought it would be tight probably a draw ut that the Lions might sneak 1-0 victory. The interviewer was slightly surprised and said "as close as that" to which came the reply "aye, but you've got to remember, we are all pushing 50 now".

No
He wasn’t even the best in that era
But he was special and if world class plaudits float someone’s boat then yes he most probably was world class
Celtic dominated Scottish football late 60s early 70s
They were a major European force at the same time
They didn’t do this without having ‘world class’ players
Johnstone woukd clearly be one
Worth remembering the Rangers team of the 60s was also fantastic the only difference in the teams was the manager from 66 giving them the edge
So edging out a team of Baxter Caldow Greig Henderson shearer Etc for me means they had some fek off great players

Comparing players across eras is a bit like comparing boxers
The world now the top players boxers have an entourage of folk advising on healthy liftin etc
So one would imagine the modern ones would win
Anything we can measure is improving 100 metres
Mile, throwing distances etc
Why sulus football be different

Correct era is always contextual

Jimmy was was an icon both physically and in unique playing style viz being able to do something few others could. In these respects he stood out. Was he the standout player of that team? Not so sure?
