Strangely enough, last few days in the car I'd been playing the soundtrack to The Mission over and over.
Fantastic composer, RIP.
Not too heralded, but I have a particular soft spot for Carter Burwell, the bloke who does most of the music scores for the Coen brothers.
Also, anyone off the top of their head know who composed the score for There Wille Be Blood? I remember sitting in the cinema and being completely blown away by how suffocatingly oppressive it made the vast open spaces feel in the scenes where the main character's fencing off his land.

carter burwell is great, does some very nice melancholic work. in a very different vein i think cliff martinez has done 2 or 3 great scores over the past decade.
off the very top of my head i thought TWBB was that guy from radiohead, jonny greenwood, but, like you, i'm too lazy to google it.

The soundtrack to Once Upon a Time in America is one of the greatest. Deborah's Theme, Poverty, Cockeye's Song etc are out of this world.
And he did The Untouchables as well - is it possible to listen to this without getting goosebumps?

Don
Certainly up there with the very best. The music to Once Upon A Time In The West is one of the greatest movie soundtracks ever.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ennio wrote the score and Sergio shot the film to the
music - resulting in a unique and wonderful film. I don't know why so many people say "the greatest" or "better than" when it comes to the arts. It's all opinion and preference anyway - Ennio lived a long and rich life, and was a brilliant composer - one that will be remembered in 200 years.

A great man. For me one of my favourite film score composers of the 20th century. I’ve had the privilege to meet him on several occasions, and once had an amazing experience where I played in an orchestra which he conducted. It was amazing to see how he worked, the dedication and knowledge he had and how he was able to communicate his ideas across the musicians he directed.
Amazingly talented, and humble man. RIP.

Compared to the baseless bragging that is the bedrock of this site, that is a hell of a story!

Jonny Greenwood. Yes, him outta Radiohead. He’s done loads of other fantastic soundtrack work too.

‘ Leone basically made silent films with the odd bit of dialogue, the music really became the star of some scenes.’
Leone would have Morricone score the music, then shoot the scene around it.
‘Morricone-esque’. Williams and Zimmer, both fine composers, but neither have had the same influence musically as he has.

Cheers Don and Lex. I'll check him out.
Wasn't out of laziness, btw. I read the news just moments before scooting out to take my 8-year-old to music class, of all weird coincidences, so I only had time to post the message and log out.
The Mission soundtrack was still in the car CD player. Weirdly enough, without me saying a single word she started paying more attention to the music than any of the previous times we'd listened to it. She asked if the film was a musical, so I explained that every movie has music that you often don't notice but that it helps set the mood for each scene. She then spent the entire ride listening carefully, talking about the kind of moods each piece suggested and imagining possible scenes for each track that played. In the end, I told her that the man who composed the music had just died that very day, age 91. She shifted the conversation to working out how old she'd be in the year 2100 (89) and pointing out that I'd be dead by then too.

Sounds like a cheery car ride, ioag
The Mission soundtrack is wonderful though. Once Upon A Time In America also.

She is so matter of fact about death for an 8-year-old that I think I might be better off taking her to assassin classes rather than music.
