Defensive Line

IMO the biggest issue with this United side is the defensive line.

They are often far too deep and this expands the midfield area making it difficult for Pogba, Bruno and Matic/Fred to cohesively play together and also makes it impossible for them to quickly regain possession.

For about 15 mins in the second half, we got it right. We were able to win the ball high up the pitch and also pick up the pieces easily from Sevilla's long passes. We created good chances and frankly, Sevilla couldn't cope. Inexplicably, we then went backwards and Maguire is the problem.

I could tell from Ole's post match comments that the dropping back was not a tactical instruction and given that Maguire is the captain, this is a real problem.

I see the defensive line killing our midfield time and time again and it's time for Solskjaer to put his foot down, whoever doesn't want to do what he asks needs to be out of the team and Maguire is the player I'm focusing on here.

I think he was a bad signing unfortunately.

Maguire and AWB were never cut out for playing a high line. They were desperation buys which would cause problems in the long run over style of play.

You can’t describe Maguire as a desperation buy.

The club was actively scouting him whilst he was still at Hull, he actually worked under Phelan, and Mourinho wanted him the summer before he signed.

We were following his progress closely for years.

Problems with the defence for me stems from the keeper. A good keeper commands his area, Tells the defences to push up or drop back ect. Ddg doesn’t say boo to a goose. For example if we had a keeper like peter schmeichel in net. Our defence would improve dramatically.

That might be so, but we didn't sign him until we really needed a leader at the back who's dominant in the air. He was the only option it would seem, and we had to part with £80m.

You didn’t see Casillas, Buffon, Lloris, Van de Sar, or Cech running around shouting at their defenders all game.

You don’t see Allison doing it, either.

I think we were looking for an aerially dominant leader who can pass the ball and bring it out.

Something of a rarity which we got.

People would be saying he was a great signing if we’d spent £50m and not £80m. Which isn’t the player or the manager’s fault.

Well that's it really. We found ourselves in a position where we needed such a player, and Leicester knew it. We couldn't wait another season, as we needed to strengthen the defence.

Van de sar commanded his area and would point and direct their position. He was also a superior keeper who would didnt hug the line

AWB needs a proper winger in front of him, and to build a rapport so they know when to overlap, and cross, or play it safe.
