It's being mentioned around these parts as a decent achievement, I've even seen comments from some posters which appear to question whether anyone could have done better with your squad etc etc.
Now I very much doubt City could've have been caught regardless of who was manager and Liverpool certainly wouldn't have been, so technically - in terms of final League standing - it's not wrong to say Ole did as well as he could have (if final league standing is the be all and end all).
You finished on 66 points however. That's not a particularly encouraging season, in fact it's the same points total you got the year before. That points total lands you 6th in 2019, 6th in 2018, 7th in 2017 and it's not until you reach 2016 that it would get you 4th.
*btw, in that 2016 season we (Arsenal) finished 2nd yet were mostly bang average in reality
While the Spurs drubbing was still a freak result, last season United were pretty damn poor too. It was just masked to many pundits and supporters in those final standings because everyone else had absolute shockers bar Liverpool.
So basically, just relax, stop getting your hopes up and accept that you are complete dross
Third place last season

"Chelsea had a rookie in there who didn’t sign any players."
Is this nonsense still being spouted out?
They signed Pulisic and Kovacic and they also brought back a load of their loan players in Mount, Abraham and Tomori to name a few.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it’s more about not being able to make any supplemental signings if things got bad.
The January signing of Bruno saved our season. Chelsea couldn’t sign anyone. Had the tables been turned and we had a transfer ban and Chelsea signed Bruno they’d no doubt have finished miles above us.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They had their ban lifted by January and didn't sign anyone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is that so? Fair enough.

Damn it... I hate it when the Arsenal fans are all excitable and think they are a big club, means we are heading into mid autumn and still a while off until their Xmas capitulation

Spoken from experience, OP?

Yes seen it happen with our lot in that 2016 season for instance. Personally though, I'm always overly negative when it comes to Arsenal so not in the sense that I thought we were heading for a decent season in 2017
----------------------------------------------------------------------
haha fair enough.
Things look pretty bleak today but over the years I've learned not to panic when it comes to United - particularly when our rivals don't exactly look steady.

Well Arsenal have always and will always be a big club, no matter how shiiit we are. And we are all aware we are not very good nor guaranteed to even finish above United. But that’s got nothing to do with the OP does it? Just deflecting away from the fact that you are also shiiit and will always be with Ole at the wheel and Ed doing the deals

It was deffo an achievement. Third place is still third place. It’s just not that big an achievement that proves too much about Ole’s suitability as a United manager.

It is an achievement from where we were and where we are as a club. However, it isn't something to celebrate.
