Is Sergio Ramos the best defender ever?

Article on BBC Sport website:

"Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos said he hopes he can get a few more records after his 100th goal for the club.

Ramos' header gave Real a 2-0 lead against Inter Milan as they eventually won 3-2 for their first Champions League win of the season.

That was his 55th header for the club - on top of 21 penalties, two free-kicks and 22 goals using his feet from open play.

"It's not bad," the 34-year-old said. "Individual records are secondary, but you like hitting them. As long as they keep on helping the side win then hopefully I can get a few more."

He has scored 14 Champions League goals across 11 seasons (only Raul and Karim Benzema have scored in more Champions League seasons for Real than Ramos). He has netted a record 74 in La Liga (including two for Sevilla), seven in the Spanish Cup and a smattering across other competitions.

In total he has played 659 times for the club and won 22 trophies."

The following people have got to be amongst the best 50 defenders of all time: Franco Baresi, Franz Beckenbauer, Fabio Cannavaro, Ronald Koeman, Bobby Moore, Paolo Maldini, Daniel Passarella

Thousands of football fans worldwide would say Ramos isn't in the same league as Beckenbauer or Maldini in terms of decision making, reading of the game, leadership and defensive skills.....

When has anyone ever looked at Ramos and said...that was a brilliant defensive performance?

You can almost predict odd, basically illogical comments like this would crop up. The guy has made 910 appearances for club and country over 17 years, won every single thing available to him as a key member of the side and in multiple instances, as captain. And you think in all that time he has probably not had one ‘brilliant’ defensive performance. Aye mate he’s just lucked it out his whole career

To be considered an all time great you literally have to be at the top of your game for multiple seasons at a time. When has Ramos ever looked like the best defender in the world over the course of one season?...let alone multiple.

Also Jose Pinto has a plethora of trophies at his disposal...must definitely be one of the best keepers to ever play the game by that logic.

This is literally the definition of Sergio Ramos’ career. He started this decade as one of the best CBs in the world and finishes it off as such. Prior to that one of the stronger RBs in Europe.

10 times FIFPro World XI
8 times UEFA team of the year
5 times La Liga Best Defender award

Individual awards aren’t infallible but Christ there is some evidence here to support that yes, this is someone who has had brilliant defensive performances and seasons.

Also Jose Pinto has a plethora of trophies at his disposal...must definitely be one of the best keepers to ever play the game by that logic.

That’s just not what I said though is it? I said he won those trophies as a key player and in multiple instances, as captain. I didn’t say he is definitely the best ever player to play the game, I’ve never said that. I’ve challenged you saying you doubt Sergio Ramos, despite playing 910 professional games, despite being a key player for multiple trophy winning sides, despite literal all subjective and objective evidence to the contrary, has ever had one brilliant defensive performance. You can admit you’re wrong, you know.
