Wolves v Aston Villa preview [LIVE]

Date: Saturday 12h December
Kick off: 12.30
Venue: Molineux

On Saturday Wolves welcome midlands rivals, Aston Villa to Molineux.
Finally, Wolves get to play a game on a Saturday! The last league game that they played on a Saturday was on July 4th.

After a strong start to the season Villa have slumped to 12th in the table with just one win in their last 5 games.

Wolves come into the game on the back of a 4-0 thumping by Liverpool at Anfield but none the less are enjoying a positive start to the season with 17 points from the first 11 games.

Wolves’ boss Nuno Espirito Santo has been experimenting with a new 4 at the back set up in the last couple of games. He now has the added factor of not having an established centre forward thanks to the long term injury to Raul Jimenez. This has resulted in the emergence of several under 21 players who, it is fair to say, have all risen to the challenge and shown real promise.

Perhaps the biggest concern is the weakness on the right side of the defence. Ex- Barcelona player Nelson Semedo has failed to impress and many fans are now starting to question his defensive abilities.

Villa’s last game was postponed due to an outbreak of Covid-19 at opponents, Newcastle’s training ground. Will this make them favourites for this game? Probably not, although Dean Smith will be keen to get his side back to winning ways.

The game at Molineux last season saw Wolves, boosted by a capacity crowd, run out 2-1 winners with goals from Rúben Neves, Raúl Jiménez and Trézéguet The reverse fixture at Villa Park was played behind closed doors but nonetheless again resulted in a win for Wolves, this time by a single Dendoncker goal.

The game will be shown live on BT Sport 1

Gem’s prediction 2-0

Good to see Jonny Otto back on the training ground and looking fit and strong. Should be back soon but will he get his place back?

It will take Jonny a little while to get back to full match fitness and we have two decent signings for that position in Marcal and Ait Nouri.

Marcal is starting to show his quality and after the Arsenal game was selected in the Premier League team of the week. Ait Nouri looks a very good prospect but looks more suited to the wing back than full back position to me.

Nuno has a difficult choice to make because I thought Jonny was one of our best players prior to his injury

Much better to be in a position of having that choice rather than the situation we have been in with Raul for two years now where there hasn’t been a decent alternative if he got injured. Let’s hope Silva can get to be that player in time

Will Jonny be back soon? It was quite a severe injury and not one he should be rushed back from. I imagine he is only light training at the moment.

He's running and kicking a ball so all looking quite positive.

Just checked, it was the Olympiacos game on August 6th when Jonny got crocked so he has been out for 14 weeks now

I think the original expectation was that he would be back playing in January

That's quite quick for his type of injury. I would have thought it would be 6 months minimum (an ACL injury can be up to 9 months), so to have him back in 5 months would be some achievement.

Don’t know if anyone has seen a photo of the new Man Utd player Alex Telles’s hair style. There is a line down the side of his head that I thought was a shaved design in his hair

Now read that he fractured his skull in 2013 and it’s a permanent scar from his operation. It’s believed his injury was similar to Raul’s and he was out of action for 3 months only
