Teams we can draw in the Europa

As far as I’m aware these are the sides we can be drawn against on Monday ...

Red Star Belgrade
Young Boys
Molde
Slavia Prague
Benfica
Granada
Sociedad
Braga
Lille
Antwerp
Maccabi Tel Aviv

If Ole is still at the club obviously Molde is the dream draw. Otherwise wouldn’t mind Antwerp or Slavia Prague. The ones to avoid are Sociedad and Benfica.

I doubt the glazers care that much about winning trophies. I’ve often said if they found a manager who guaranteed them 4th every season that didn’t go public with any dissent and the fans tolerated they’d be happy to give them a job for life

Ask any of them whether they’d forfeit one year’s dividend (£18.5M they’ve just paid themselves between them) for a CL or PL title.

They’d wet themselves laughing.

The prize money from getting to the round of 16 of the CL is more than winning the Europa. I think the tv share is bigger from the CL as well. Reaching the knockout stages of the CL is more lucrative than doing well in the Europa, always has been.

Nah Dazza, it isn’t. I was looking the other day.

I can’t remember the exact figures, but if all things are equal to the point at which you drop down from the CL to the EL (finishing third rather than second in the group), you’ll bank much more cash then running to the EL final (even if you don’t win the thing) than you would by being knocked out in the CL round of 16.

But the prize money and tv share is lower, I believe.

I doubt Shakhtar care that much about the money anyway, as it’s not a massive amount more, even if the matchday revenue bumps it up.

They just have more of a shot at winning it.

Yeah, the share of both is lower. The difference would just be made over the number of rounds played.

There was an article the other day saying that Glazers see the quarters as the expectation when we qualify for the CL, and what they try and forecast for the revenue for those seasons.

I think it’s why they waited so long to sack Mourinho. And why I never expected them to sack Ole, even if our prem form had been really shiiiiiit, as they wouldn’t want to jeopardise qualifying for the knock out stages.

I would have to check, but I think getting to the EL final having dropped down from the CL would still likely net you as much if not more cash than reaching the CL quarters.

No pressure then

To be fair, we should be challenging for the EL now.

Spurs, Arsenal and Leicester probably the biggest threats. Maybe Milan.

I don’t think it does. One of the points made was that getting out of the group and into the quarters gives you a bigger share of the tv rights and the coefficient contributes to it as well, which I didn’t realise.

Obviously there’s no fans in the stadium but the big CL games bring in more money than a Europa game as well. Then there’s all the brand exposure shiiiiit that they love, and that I don’t know much about.

Being a consistent, CL knock out round team is the minimum expectation for the club. Which is fair enough as a club of our wealth and size should expect that.

Though it’s hard to have that expectation when we are so terribly run. But they obviously don’t see things like we do, hence why they continually fack things up.
