Farewell Tommy Doc

Sad to hear the passing of former Chelsea manager Tommy Docherty today!

He will go down in our history as the man who gave us Docherty's diamonds, the exciting team that thrilled crowds in the early 60s.

It's hard to underestimate how important he was for Chelsea and took us to almost winning the league in the mid 60s.

Good piece on him and his importance to us here for anyone who wants a read!

Good article Brummie. He produced an exciting young team that was there or there abouts including playing quite regularly in Europe (without winning major silverware too much) which set the foundations for the great 1970 team that was to follow. Any bloke that brings an individual like Charlie Cooke to the Club can marry my wife anytime!!

Have you got Gerri's permission to say that!!

I'm hoping someone will take me up on my offer

Problem is that you would probably undercut me with a cash incentive also, with your missus thrown in anyway!!

OP.. I remember that 2-6 at Villa Park and I think your next away was at Maine Rd when you beat City 1-4. I was at that game and you didn't seem to have had enough of the ball to win like that.
That was a great counter attacking team that the Doc built. Almost ahead of his time and now commonplace.
Another football character gone RIP

Also the bod that got rid of the previously ordinary kit for the new (modern then) iconic kit that we all now know and love!! Even now, that kit has never been improved on, hence last year's FA Cup retro kit. Thanks for the legacy Tommy!!

I was only about 7 at the time of that 2-6 game at Villa Park and it was the first I have a memory of my dad taking me to, unfortunately you have me at a disadvantage to what the follow on game was.

I've spoken to the great Bobby Tambling, who scored 5 that day, about the game and also to John Boyle who got an assist to one of Bobby's goals and also scored the 6th. He was very humble about his goal and assist.

It's a shame The Doc couldn't see that team out to it's full potential and his legacy remains very under rated to this day!

Absolutely my time - it was the Doc who said to me 'Thanks son, but no thanks.' after I had 3 trials at the Welsh Harp on leaving school in 1962 I think it was. I got to see all the brilliant young lads who came through then. Well done Tommy, and thank you.

That must have been heartbreaking bloo?

Not really Brum - I knew in my heart I was nowhere near good enough. But being asked to come back twice after initial trial was very pleasing.

Still quite an achievement bloo. I went for trials with Brent once and thought that seemed to be something, so in my book to get recalled by the Club we all love, on 3 separate occasions, and against the far higher levels of competition that you would have faced, is no mean feat in my book. Well done!!

Thanks '69'! Worth a try eh! Not bad for a slightly disabled kid - I was a very early thalidomide 'victim'.
