After mu hugely successful opening bowling partnership article, I thought I'd look at opening batsmen!!!
Hobbs & Sutcliffe are the obvious place to start. Both are all time greats for England and played a lot together during the 20's and 30's
I started watching Cricket in the early 80's and Greenidge & Haynes were the main men. The former, with his infamous limp being the better imo.
Onto the 2000's and Hayden & Langer were the top order that laid the foundations for Punter and co to thrive on. Hayden the aggressor and Langer the more resolute foil
Honourable mentions
Sehwag & Gambhir
Cook & Strauss
Anwar & Sohail
Smith & Gibbs
Jayasuria & Atapattu

Pretty sure DeVilliers did not open in tests?
Greenidge and Hayes was the benchmark.

Didn't AB and Smith share a record opening stand?

AB did open on occasions.
Never saw Barry Richards play. Like with Graeme Pollock, a wasted career.

Cook and Strauss, Greenidge and Haynes best in my lifetime though. 80s Gooch and Robinson.

I thought Gibbs and Kirsten were together at one time.
Slater and Taylor were good
Recently Dhawan and Rohit Sharma in white ball cricket
Obviously Hayden and Langer
But my favourite were Greenidge and Haynes.

Post 2000, without a shadow of doubt, its Hayden vs Langer, they smashed all bowling attacks at home and abroad . Pre-2000 Haynes and Greenidge. They played in an era where difficulty level of playing conditions and bowling was at its zenith
