Rotherham United 3 - 0 Derby County

ASSEAL New York Stadium
Rotherham

7.00pm Weds 3rd Feb 2021

2.00pm for Dixie

8.00pm for Cat

Now the match is reorganised for Wednesday, we must hope for no more rain.

This is the start of 7 matches in the shortest month of the year. Confidence seems to be high after a three match winning streak but any euphoria is tempered by the awful injury to Bielik. Still no official news but I doubt we'll see him thus side of the October half term

Ever so slowly we are inching our way up the table and now sit a dizzingly scary 14 points off the play-off

Our new talisman Graham Shinne seems to grow in status with each game and seems to complement the likes of Wisdom, Clarke Buchanan.

Rotherham still managed to beat us a couple of weeks ago and we seem prone to struggle against 'weaker', 'non-football' teams - so beware on Tuesday!!!!

Team:-

Marshall
Wisdom
Shinnie
Jozwiak
Bird
Waghorn
Byrne
Kazim-Richards
Clarke
Buchannan
Knight

Subs:
Roos, Forsyth, Mengi, Sibley, McDonald, Watson, Mitchell-Lawson, Thompson, Brown

Or will it be????

It just shows that we can't afford to let our standards slip one iota. We don't have a margin that will allow for less than maximum effort and concentration. Last night the midfield had an off day, probably due to fatigue. We have been lauding Shinnie and with good reason but he had a poor game last night. The first goal was terrible, we just seemed to switch off and that seemed to derail the defence which was a bit alarming. It would all have been very different though if Gregory has stuck away his sitter.

Times report. Rooney comes in for some stick after criticising the Rotherham chairman for "a lack of class"......

The recent results of three 1 0 wins have papered over the cracks of what our problem has been since the start of the season. We don't have a quality forward who can turn chances in to goals.

CKR works hard and has good hold up play but has never been prolific over a long career so we shouldn't expect him to suddenly change in to Mo Salah. Waghorn lacks the composure to be a striker. Sibley looked promising at the end of last season but has faded. Gregory is a journeyman forward, there is a reason why he wasn't making the first 11 at Stoke.

In virtually every game this season we have had periods of dominance but haven't converted that in to goals. In order to get any result the defence has to work its socks off. We can't keep getting 1 0 wins for ever. At least last night's result has been a reality check to those fantasising about a top 6 finish. We should be thankful though that from the last four games scored 3, conceded 3, we have 9 points.

I mentioned the shouting on the thread at the start of the game. He was abusive to the ref all through. I thought it was a thug fan, who should have been thrown out of the ground

Good points Spart and can't disagree with any of that. Fact is though that although Gregory should have scored last night we still aren't actually creating a lot imo. So the best striker in the world wouldn't score if he didn't have any chances. Equally I don't think Bielik would've made much difference last night either. Hate to say it Rotherham were just better than us over both games.

Gregory's miss was one he'll have nightmares over for a long time.

We are a workmanlike team and Rooney has done well to get as much out of it as he has. Without creativity we aren't going to get "undeserved" wins as a result of a worldy or a flash of individual skill. When did we last score with a long range shot for example? Roberts showed promise I thought and perhaps there is potential for a 4-4-2 on occasions with him and Jozwiak either side and Gregory and CKR together. That would probably mean leaving out Bird and going with Knight and Shinnie for midfield energy.

Thanks for that scouse, I enjoyed it anyway; the third was a poor goal to give away, keeper will be feeling let down by his outfield players.
