Luiz cost us the game....not the ref

Fault 1- We were seconds to the end of the 1st half and Luiz allowed himself to get caught high up.

Fault 2- Rather than allow the Wolves play score so that we could begin the 2nd half 11 v 11 and try to get a winner (since we were clearly playing better) Luiz decided to run into his opponent making it very easy for the ref to give a PK and issue the red card.

Fault 3- Luiz didn't even try to protest the red card. I would like to believe that if he tried to protest it then maybe the ref might have had 2nd thoughts about it. However, by sitting on the pitch and saying nothing, Luiz basically admitted guilt.

People are saying it was not a red card, only a PK. How you explain giving a PK against a foul by the last defender and not following it with a red card? Imagine if this was done against our own attacker, will you be happy if a red didnt follow?

Have the rules changed again since this?

If not VAR must have thought it was deliberate, didn't look it to me (but then I'm not Jon Moss!).

The way our strikers are performing, there is no guarantee we would have scored if he'd let him through!

I think Luiz has to take some blame for getting himself into that position. He got there by making bad decisions, but decisions that you only have one chance to make in the heat of the moment.

The ref got the red card wrong and even with the ability to review it with VAR they still got it wrong

It's a harsh-looking one but I think it was the right decision. Wolves player was through on goal and about to shoot, Luiz gets in the way of the player's natural stride and he falls over. Had Luiz not been in that position, the player would have had a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Luiz' presence impeded the Wolves player and caused him to trip. The Wolves player would not have tripped had Luiz not been in that position.

I do think it begs the question though, how far back should a defender be positioned if there's the risk that they'll catch the player's trailing leg? Does it depend on the runner's stride? If some genetic freak with 5 ft legs is in full-stride, do you have to give him 6 ft clearance for fear of catching his trailing leg on the upswing?

Some clarity would be good.

How did Luiz cost us the game?

He did allow the player to get the ball. He made no attempt to win the ball or even tackle the player.

Its was imo just a pen and even then the contact was extremely minimal. I really don't think the wolves players studs grazing Luiz knee would bring you down like that.

The ex refs and pundits are interpreting the rules differently. A genuine attempt to play the ball would be a yellow so because Luiz didn't play the ball VAR decided he deliberately denied a goalscoring opportunity, but it was neither and just an accident.

That rule needs changing quickly , its madness

He wasn't to blame for the so called foul ,as I dont think it was a foul, if anything the Wolves guy caught his knee , but WTF was he doing so high up the field when we were winning the match and in control with only a few seconds to go before half time , for a player of his experience that is just plain stupid

No... The ref cost us the game.

It's exactly this kind of attitude which allows the refs to get away with it.
