Ole's Substitutions

A lot has been made of Ole's subs not coming on early enough (especially in games where we need a change!). I found an interesting thread someone on the United subreddit put together -https://www.reddit.com/r/reddevils/comments/ldz5i9/oc_average_time_premier_league_clubs_brought_on/

The long and short of it, is that United sit 7th out of all PL teams in terms of the time to first sub, in the second half.

No. Club Av. Min
1 Sheffield Utd 57.38
2 Liverpool 58.07
3 Leeds 59.00
4 Brighton 60.25
5 Man City 60.32
6 Spurs 60.47
7 Man Utd 61.07
8 Burnley 61.19
9 Arsenal 61.25
10 WBA 61.28
11 Leicester City 63.16
12 Newcastle 63.25
13 West Ham 65.10
14 Wolves 65.57
15 Chelsea 66.07
16 Southampton 66.38
17 Fulham 67.53
18 Everton 68.53
19 Crystal Palace 70.32
20 Aston Villa 73.25

Unfortunately it doesn't take in to account all 3 subs!

Not really a point I'm making, but thought it was interesting info!

Jose was criticised for his defensive subs. I don't recall him or LVG waiting until 80 mins to change a game we were losing. In fact Jose would sometimes make first half subs if the performance was that bad.

Dithering will get criticised more than making wrong subs, as it shows a lack of leadership.

He was criticised for waiting too long to change things as well. Spurs fans are doing the same thing.

And it’s not a case of dithering, showing a lack of leadership, that’s daft. There’s a myriad of different things that will shape why and when a manager makes subs.

I’d imagine one of the main ones would be that generally it’s the players that start the game that change the game.

Not daft at all. Moyes would wait expecting the players to do something, and they would wait expecting their manager to do something. Both looking towards each other, where's the leadership?

You're right about numerous things concided when making subs, but that doesn't excuse doing nothing when your team are playing rubbish and something needs changing.

It is daft, every manager waits to change things, it’s not about lacking leadership but trusting in the players on the pitch/lack of trust in the bench, which for most is often the case as few teams have very good benches.

I’ve lost count the amount of times a player has changed a game after screams for him to be subbed off.

I think what N2 is trying to say is....

Ole Out

Almost every player has a fan screaming for them to come off, so this doesn't mean much.

My theory is that substitutions are probably more psychological than tactical. If players believe in a manager, even a poor sub can work. If they don't believe in him, a good sub might fail.

When things aren't going well I think it is better to change something, anything, than to be passive. Fortune favours the brave.

Ole Out to get some new defenders.

Finished it for you.

This just sounds like you want managers to make changes for changes sake. That’s no leadership.

There are some managers that like to show their authority that way. It shows that someone is steering the ship.

Ofcourse changes don't have to be substitutions. But if things aren't going right, something has to change to give players renewed hope. They're not going to continue to believe in something that isn't working.
