So lads and lasses...writing this 2 minutes into the game so it's not about hindsight. I want those who are Arteta in to explain their feelings about that midfield pairing and Willian playing over Martinelli. Also...Willian in on the left and Pepe is on the right...Pepe has been horrible on the right and pretty good on the left..can anyone explain these decisions? Where is Martinelli????
I am genuinely curious as I think they once again demonstrate a coach who is clueless about what players work well together and what players should not be on the field at all.
Note....we MAY win..but I want an explanation prior because I doubt many here think Elneny/Xhaka is a good partnership. Oh as I write this..Leicester score. And who would have picked Willian over Martinelli??

What the faaack are you on about. Martinelli is not the finished article by any means but based on the form Willian has shown all season, Martinelli plays EVERY time. If I ask you what Willian has done well this season, you will point to today, last Thursday and the first game of the season. If that is enough for you...well good for you I guess. Some of us cannot stomach a player playing 25+ games or so and have shown NOTHING.

Perhaps he's not playing cos Arteta has seen plenty of him and he's sheite. Willian even if he's not influential in a game has the fundamental qualities to keep and pass the ball efficiently, something Martinelli doesn't do (even before his injury problems). I had several question marks about the starting selection today, but Martinelli not playing was the last of my concerns.

I'm not saying he's a sheite player. I'm saying he's returned from a long-term injury and Arteta who sees him train obviously thinks he's not ready. If Martinelli is not providing sharpness in the final 3rd, he offers us nothing because he's not a technical player who can use the ball efficiently.

But I don't think we can claim Arteta has any sort of consistency with players. Saliba...one month and never saw a look in. Willian...6 months of crap but STILL getting time throughout it. Nketiah...played him for ages even when he was poor...but now the kid does not even make the bench. Martinelli...on the bench for 8 games or so...minimal game time. Laca has bad game vs Pool and is dropped...Bellerin has had numerous bad games but starts 95% of the time. Curious to see what happens to Ceballos now...I would play him vs Burnley..but I doubt he plays.
My point is that we can't think Martinelli is not training well...because why would he be on the bench? And if we think Arteta bases his squad on training performances, then Willian must be Messi-like in training because based on his GAME performances, I would not want him near the squad at all. To me is stinks of favoritism and indecisiveness.
All in all, I want all our players to perform..and if Willian can play like he did today in 8 of the next 12 league games, he is worth the time every time.
