Derby County 2 - 0 Luton Town

Pride Park Stadium
Derby

2nd April 2021

I hate international breaks. Well I used to, but now being so detached from football realities it just feels like two weeks away from the library.

Derby go into this game - how many times have we said this? - needing to win. The miserable form has continued just as we thought we had turned the corner and now a feeling of consternation is hovering over the North Stand and the South Stand and all stands in between. Having a squad the size of Monaco isn't helping as everyone has to have a go in the team.

Injuries aren't the issue but ironically with a team in such a lowly position, it's international call-ups that could curtail a start for the likes of Jozwiak, Marshall, Lawrence or Knight.

Luton are beatable but there are two very tough following fixtures in Reading and Norwich. Get your bets on for 9/9 points in the next three games............

Missed the game today as I was driving home from Glasgow.

Was it a good game? Did we play well?

Ey up Jorv. We started very strongly. 4-4-2 with Sibley right, Lawrence left and Waghorn and Gregory up front. Waghorn and Sibley in particular looked very sharp. The first goal came early - a cross from the right which Waghorn did well to reach at the far post and direct across goal for a tap in from Gregory. We were the better team but they broke once and should have equalised but Marshall made a good save when their player was clean through with a simple chance. Then Waghorn pulled his hamstring just before half time. Early second half Lawrence went on a good run and was tripped in the box for a Shinnie pen. After that it was reasonably comfortable. Gregory also pulled his hamstring so we then went 4-3-3 to see it out. I thought Shinnie was MOM but Waghorn was excellent until his injury as was Byrne and Lawrence looked threatening in the second half in particular.

Yes, more reassuring than scintillating. As Vidal intimates, we did look comfortable but they cudda shudda scored but they didn't so we won.

I was pleased to see Forsyth back today, thought he was very solid. With our precarious position Rooney was sensible to go for the most tried and tested defensive line-up.

Typical that Waggy injures himself whilst putting in a shift!

Morning after view :
Well having recovered from the previous nights beer and curry Mrs Hennessey and I sat down in front of our 65 inch, San Miguels in hand - to see if we could improve on that awful run.
As others I was pleased to see the management had gone for the most experienced line up. Interesting too the partnership of Waghorn and Gregory up front.
Someone on here a few weeks ago threw in a stat showing that the team that scores first, statistically (usually) wins. So I was heartened when we scored early on - and particularly so to get a second early in the 2nd half.
The only thing that surprised me a little was that we didn't put 'someone' - maybe Clarke, to sit on their Goliath like CF as he often seemed to get a free header (without actually doing much with it).
Anyway, our game management seemed ok,and although Luton huffed and puffed didn't trouble us too much.... although when we sit back, as we did I always fear the worst.
So, well done Derby. The table does look better today although we have to keep this going and not slip back into our old ways. Quite who will play alongside Ckr on Monday I dont know. I see Stretton scored again for Stockport so all good experience for him but when we only play with one up front we just dont threaten.....
